Catacombs

Adhering to horror tradition, the fourth installment in this fright-franchise series has nothing to do with any of its previous namesakes, which in turn bore no resemblance to one another. While fairly feeble in the fear department -- a strong live-burial scene and a Christ-as-psycho-killer sequence (!) represent the exceptions -- this is oddly successful at conveying the modern monks' (nicely shaded characters portrayed by mostly low-key Euro thesps) cloistered lifestyles and petty frictions.
