Deliberately discarding the spit and polish of a studio film to make a manifesto railing against the blockbuster invasion of the 90s is a fun idea, but even if a film is aiming for overwrought dreck, it still needs to be at least competently filmed; this is just loud, overplayed, one-note ugliness, which ironically shows even less film-making smarts than the subjects being satirised. Performances are appalling and amateurish right across the board; Griffith looks uncomfortable and embarrassed.

It does seem to be in bad taste for a film with such a snarky attitude towards mainstream movies to end up being worse than some of the popular blockbusters and weepies of this time. It does seem very slapped together and cheap, but it does retain a keen spirit, upheld by the committed performances, and it does find some off-beat and very amusing avenues in its concept.

While I'm not entirely into this brand of satire it is a very funny ride. You got Michael Shannon asking about Mel Gibson's balls among other things. I'm unsure why this is considered one of Waters lesser works maybe people had some sort of attachment to the Hollywood system still. Make good movies or fucking die has only become more relevant and boy howdy do I have a kill list
