The film is like a freakin' grinder. Swallows you from a side, chews you around with unmatched brutality, and tosses you out from the other side completely exhausted. Every shot boils with scathing intensity. Every scene questions your sanity. It is hard to sit through the movie without flinching and squirming, and remind you this is not a horror film. Cell 211 has two words written all over it. Cult. And Classic.

What immediately drew me to the film was Tosar and his brilliant portrayal of the prison bad ass, Malamadre. For most of the film I experienced so much anxiety. The anticipation was killing me and a film hadn't made me feel quite like that in a very long time. You feel and root for Juan, but simultaneously feel the same way for Malamadre, an extremely likable and charismatic villain. A great movie, and one of the most horrifying in the "wrong place wrong time" category. Really entertaining.

Celda 211 is an emotionally draining movie does a great job making you like the character and then making you watch as the worst possible things happen to him. In the process, the story looses some credibility, but the pace is fast enough and the acting is so captivating, that you do not have enough time to question how realistic it really is. Exactly the movie Hollywood loves to put dirty hands on. Remake is inevitable.

Tosar gives the performance that would catapult any English-speaking actor towards international stardom. The rest isn't too shabby either and this is definitely the best Spanish movie since "Todo sobre mi madre".

A superb tale with unexpected progression and character developments, a very pleasant breath of fresh air among an industry otherwise filled with Hollywood-driven genre and film cliches. I genuinely thought I knew where the plot was headed and what was going to happen, and I was pleasantly surprised. The tension of the film is ridiculously palpable and I struggled to finish my meal while watching. That plus an incredible Tosar, Ammann, support cast and overall execution makes for an awesome film

Up there with Un Prophète as one if not the best prison movie of this milennium.

Not sure what lenses they used, but the whole thing looks like it was shot on a DVCAM - in other words, terrible and outdated - making every single scene lack some serious cinematic flair. Having the riot as your main focus isn't particularly interesting either, even less so when the one leading it looks like a spanish-tongued Homer Simpson wearing a sleeveless hoodie.

Okay, plausible this one ain't. Why did they just leave the guy behind like that? And we're really expected to believe that such a rookie would prove to be so heads-up in the clutch? Then too there was the whole business with his wife later on. But very well-directed, and gripping throughout, with excellent performances by the two leads. The moral of this one is clear: never ever show up for work a day early.

Nice story, very tense. The main weakness is the photography - it reminds me of TV movies.

Cool premise, a great (and constant) buildup of tension, with an effective finale to top it all off.

I love prison movies, but i found this quite mediocre. The second half of the movie is just not interesting enough. The characters is also quite unengaging. Some actually compare this to "The Prophet" in terms of quality - Its not even remotely close.

Even though it took the film about 40 minutes to become interesting, it was really worth it. Luis Tosar did a marvelous job.

An excellent suspenseful thriller that constantly bests itself to a fantastic finale. A great performance from Ammann carries the film, but it's the tight script that brings the energy to the film.

"Celda 211" ranks as a particularly compelling prison film. It's not perfect, as the script tends to be a little inconsistent at times in terms of both believability and pacing, but the direction is claustrophobic enough and the acting particularly convincing. Moreover the makers handled the transition of the characters brilliantly and, to top it off, didn't enslave their creation to a forced ending.

Memorable characters and a very strong showing in the first 2/3 elevates this above the average prison movie or crime thriller. For a good while it shows grit and intelligence, and kept me on seat's edge. The plot climaxes too early with a certain key event that occurs outside the prison, and from then on it loses impact. The dénouement was not to my taste but that is so often the case. In spite of the ending this is up there with the best prison movies, Tosar with the best baddies of all time!

Face paced, tense and unpredictable. We have the luxury of watching the events unfold, Juan has to react to them, precisely. An unfortunate US remake of this film is almost an inevitability.

Really suspenseful, with a spectacular antagonist in Tosar's Malamadre. Celda 211 is a brutal prison film with emphasis on the tension of having an accidental "undercover" guard amidst the prison riot, but it still manages to carry the themes we love in the prison genre. It works best when Malamadre is on screen, and the most effective and surprising part of the film is how you end up liking him, too.

very thrilling, well directed, brilliantly acted. what is the deal with ETA though? it is neither included nor excluded. disturbed me a little. also, the outside riot scenes were quite clumsy. if you can't shoot it, well don't shoot it.

In the mist of some great prison movies the resent years (R, Bronson and Un Prophete) Celda 211 has been somewhat forgotten, and what a shame that is. Even though its storyline is a bit over the top and the fact that its probably a good thing to know a little about Spanish politics, the ETA etc. it is still a thrilling film, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. That is supported by some great performances, especially by Tosar, and makes Celda 211 a highly recommendable prison flick!

Just a very solid honest to goodness thriller. The way it's shot is somewhat beguiling in that it evokes a sense of 90s-styled telenovelas that you expect will unfold in a rather predictable way; it doesn't. Instead it boasts a level of intensity in the acting and plot that really resembles Sicario more than anything (though on a much lower budget). Worth a watch for a good dose of tension in a bottle.

I am having a slow change of heart, here on out going to be more stringent with the ranking. The film has a great cast and the acting immerses the audience. The overall work with the shots (setting and composition) really good. I can't say much about the dialogue because I watched with subtitles but the story could have been more interesting. There was a lot of paths untrodden. The cliches spoilt the film for me. All the same the film should be watched because its an interesting one time ride.

Reminds me of 'Battle in Seattle', of what I can remember of it. The beginning part was good, I was into the film, immersed in what was going on, getting to know the characters, good acting by the two leading actors. It was around the time the wife came to the prison where it fell apart. The 'beating' was terrible acting, couldn't stop thinking about it for the rest of the film. Enjoyable yes, but left a lot to be desired.
