Lee Simon, unsuccessful journalist and wanna-be novelist, tries to get a foot into the door with celebrities. After divorcing his wife Robin, Lee gets to meet a lot folks of the rich and / or beautiful, partly through journalism, partly because he has a script to offer. But life among those from out-of-this-world is hard, and his putative success always results in defeat. Meanwhile Robin meets a very desirable TV-producer and takes the first steps in the world of celebrities herself. (imdb)

It's almost like Woody Allen challenged himself to make a movie with the most unlikable character ever and try to get it to work. It doesn't and my god is Branagh terrible. I don't know why Woody didn't just play Lee Simon himself, maybe it would've been more bearable. Judy Davis is pretty good and I didn't mind Leo's small role. The cameos in this movie are awesome too. Overall it is grating and annoying.

One of my least favorite of Allen's work. Kenneth Branagh was acting so much like Woody himself (in his admittedly Woody surrogate role) it was distracting. It was fun seeing Sam Rockwell as a young guy even if he was just standing around with spiked hair.

A rather caustic portrait of personal and social superficiality, with some very good moments. Branagh is unlikeable but he's meant to be.

While occasional elements are pleasing & interesting, many scenes which seem to have little to do with the picture seem to just be there & go on and on, while the main characters are wound so tight that they make me tense & irritated to the point where if i encountered them in life i would be screaming at them to get away from me. Note the bizarre performance by not Woody but exactly like him, amazing but why?

Nothing new or interesting; Branagh as Allen is grating and unnecessary.

Minor Woody Allen when he should be at his best. The movie looks great, but fails on dramatic and comedic levels.

Not Woody's best movie, but there are some great moments with Kenneth Branagh and, I think, Winona Ryder (surprisingly enough). Maybe a little overconfident about his caustic views on celebrities--not many original throughts.

Another movie from the wilderness of Woody Allen's lost decade.

Pretty selfindulgent stuff but it manages to be funny and depraved enough that it gets some credibility.

Mostly forgettable but doesn't really deserve the hate. I will always remember this as the moment I started thinking that DiCaprio could be a serious actor, despite how little we see of him.

Not wholly memorable, but funny enough, and Branagh does a stellar Woody Allen.

Only worth it for all the actors that show up. One of the few films I almost fell asleep watching, sorry Woody.

It's 1998, and the Woody Allen impression is all the rage. KENNETH BRANAGH, WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME? Ugh. Anyways. This film is meandering and difficult to parse, but in the worst possible way.

Of course it's gorgeous with Nykvist as the DP, but ultimately it's a little dull and overlong.

Why does Woody Allen force his male leads to speak like he does? Celebrity is okay, there are some good characters and scenes, but as a whole, it's hit or miss.

The 90's and early 00's were an awkward period of hits and misses for Allen, he attempted to put his character's personalities in actors who had no place around him and this movie fails, in part, because of that. It doesn't really help the matter that by the time Allen lifted his pen from paper this one was a dud.

I'd compare the critical reaction of this movie to the critical reaction of The Rules of Attraction, in that, a lot of people seemed to have disliked Celebrity because the people in it were superficial assholes, despite the fact that Allen set out to make a movie about superficial assholes. To those who missed the point, damn you. To those who saw what was going on and still disliked it, touche. Personally, I thought it was a good film about self-absorption. DiCaprio's sequence is great.

I'm one of the people who generally trust IMDb ratings and the general consensus, but I believe you guys have got this one wrong. This is a great looking movie with excellent mood; the core of Woody Allen's idiosyncrasy. 6.3 is a shame while some of his lesser works get (7+)s and (8+)s. I'll deviate and cite this one as Allen's masterpiece and the best film of 1998.

The bad bits are admittedly pretty bad (Woody's attempts at '90s edginess are a little embarrassing) and Branagh just doing a flat-out imitation of his director is distracting. But when it's good it reminded me of Stardust Memories, in its kind of languid naturalism, and I don't think its bad reputation is justified.

Lethargic tensionless plot and very few laughs, but not as much as a slog as I thought based on the reputation and nearly 2-hour runtime. The large supporting cast gives you new guys to recognize every scene (wow, J. K. Simmons! Tony Sirico! Sam Rockwell! Hank Azaria! Jeffrey Wright!) and Branagh's Allen impression is both diabolically bad and hard to look away from. I like the scene where he accidentally crashes his car into a store.
