A young boy's (Oliveira) mother is killed in front of Rio de Janeiro's Central Station. Homeless and with nowhere to turn, he is reluctantly befriended by a lonely and cynical woman (Montenegro). Resisting her initial impulse to make a quick profit off the child, she commits to returning him to his father in Brazil's remote Northeast. The trip becomes a quest for their own identities: one boy's search for his father, and one woman's search for her heart. (Sony Pictures Classics)

Something like a Brazilian version of Record of a Tenement Gentleman, as an older, cynical woman finds herself unwillingly burdened with the care of a young boy. Fernanda Montenegro is excellent in the lead and VinÃcius de Oliveira isn't bad as the little kid either. The film tries to yank on the heartstrings a little too hard at times, and it's all a bit familiar, but it's still a moving story with a compelling central character. Nicely done.

There are so many places where this kind of story can go wrong, yet, except for a few small moments, it does everything beautifully. Sure it tugs at the heartstrings, but none of it feels cheap or easy, every emotion is earned through real character development. The slightly lighthearted tone contrasts well with the heavy parts and the glimpses into Brazilian life are a wonderful complement to the main story.

It is one of the most renowned Brazilian film, a human drama and real, with good direction, good interpretations, but is not a masterpiece.

BlurayRip no MakingOff.

This is a nice enough film from Brazil. It has some nice, human moments but I can't say I connected with it much, emotionally. I didn't like the two main characters at all at the beginning of the film, and although I grew to like them more by the end, it wasn't quite enough. It didn't do much for me overall, but that could just be because I've seen this type of film several times already.

Funny yet tragic, sad yet uplifting, and one of the best films of 1998.

A mostly solid Road Trip Drama film that works very well because of the chemistry between the two lead characters. There's some good conversations and scenes of heart and emotion in places that keep the film staying interesting all the way to the end. Very easy to follow and some nice looking shots of Brazil and themes around it. Perhaps the music score can make things just a tad bit overdramatic at times, but it's not too distracting. Overall, worth checking out for this type of movie.
