A cynic love story in a bourgeois setting. It's like Rohmer without the grace and without the good direction. A forerunner of what a large fraction french cinema has (unfortunately) become.

An atonic little romantic tale in the vein of Sagan, tepidly directed and written with a sort of depressed, semi-ironic melodramatic sensibility. Montand's expressive and naturalistic acting is rather wasted as he plays off a typically wooden Schneider and a perma-smirking and remarkably unsympathetic Frey.

An uncomfortable watch. Forced. Artificial. Woman have been shown to do a lot of things that are regressive in modern society. Maybe it was the norm 50 years back but uncomfortable to see now. Muddled. Wayward. Too many twists. For once, pleased with the climax, which is a rarity.
