I love these films. While they are fairly melodramatic in their plot machinations, they really breathe with the textures of life and never feel artificial or stagey. They also have a wonderful streak of gentle humor to them. Pierre Fresnay's Marius and Raimu (his father, the titular César) have some fairly difficult lifting to do conveying decades of anger and misunderstandings and they make it look effortless.

The final film of Marcel Pagnol's Marseille trilogy. And still it leaves me a little underwhelmed. Might be that I've still not gotten used to the all ('too-much') talking French films yet. The trilogy works best together then as singular films. Then it's more like a mini-series or a soap opera where you develop some kind of intimacy with the characters. The film is slow, but it leaves a satisfying conclusion to the story and reaches a emotional peak during the family reunion.

Overall this is a better film than the second and nearly as good as the first. We find the three title characters discovering and rebuilding their bonds. Raimu again shines the brightest, a wonderfully memorable father figure. The themes of forgiveness, reconciliation and crawling out from under your past are very resonant and endearing. The characters are all flawed but endearing, as they struggle between their conscience and their indignation. Very nice conclusion to the trilogy.
