A couple of clever bits-- a bullet in a mummy!-- can't get past the negatives here. I know it's probably kind of silly to get annoyed with racism in a Charlie-frikkin-Chan movie, but the black manservant here is the worst collection of stereotypes the era could muster. It doesn't help that the movie looks more shot-on-the-backlot than usual. A disappointment.

Charlie Chan's time in Paris was more fun then his trip to Egypt. I guess Chan is slowed down by Stepin 'Fuckin' Fetchit's slow ways. Sure Fetchit is fun in small doses in his brain dead persona, but he was used way too much here mumbling way too loud for Chan's more soft speaking manner. No screen chemistry between the two. As for the mystery, it was good.... but slow too. The cool Egyptian sets helped keeping it interesting, but the rest could have been done better.

This film uses Fetchit as its counterpoint to Chan. It uses harmful racial stereotypes to power its humor. I realize the film was made in 1935, but it's not fun or funny anymore.
