In the middle of the Aegean Sea, six men on a fishing trip on a luxury yacht decide to play a game. During this game, things will be compared. Things will be measured. Songs will be butchered, and blood will be tested. Friends will become rivals and rivals will become hungry. But at the end of the journey, when the game is over, the man who wins will be the best man. And he will wear on his smallest finger the victory ring: the Chevalier. (imdb)

A concept film which sticks loyally to its premise. It's curious to watch, like going to the zoo. But the characters are so inhuman, that we never get drawn in. It left me quite cold, even if I applaud the clinical, precise way it is presented. You think you're discovering the characters but really you never get close. A month on, I don't even remember what some of the challenges were, let alone the characters. Just the ethos of being on a luxury yacht in the Aegean and nobody else being real.

Great premise, but it trickles along rather than driving the plot. Also didn't like the cinematography.

"Chevalier" has an interesting plot, realistic acting and fun dialogues. It's far from great, but it works well as a relatively anodyne comedy/ standard social commentary.

Sharing with her national & cinematic brethren Yorgos Lanthimos' deployment of icy dark satire to filter a bitter perspective on contemporary western shortcomings, Tsangari offers her own insight into hypercompetitiveness & narcissism among the 21st Century Male. As the characters become progressively nastier, the moments witnessed are further uncomfortable--making the deadpan comedy radiate all the more with its unexpected timing.

Good premise, writing, and characters...but the pacing and style really drag it out rather than having it live up to its potential.

It takes a while for Chevalier to gain its footing, but once it does, it's humor and themes really pack a punch.

An absurdist portrayal of male competitiveness in its many forms. Funny, but with some room for improvement in its pacing.

As others have said the premise is better than the actual execution.

This doesn't necessarily bring anything new to the table as far as the so-called (ugh) "Greek Weird Wave" goes, yet in it's own modest, low-key way it might be the funniest and most perceptive comedy about masculine insecurity made by a female director since Elaine May's heyday.

Amusing idea of men measuring themselves up against each other, unfortunately with a color blind execution into boredom a lot of the time. Has smart bits and funny dialogue, but there is a disappointment in lost potential here.

The premise was a good one, as was the yacht setting and Aegean sea locations, but instead of an outrageous "greek weird wave" comedy (as the marketing implied), you get a very low-key film which doesn't really lift off. While I admired it for keeping its own way, I couldn't help wondering if something a lot better could have been done with the premise.
