When the government agency fails to deliver even the meager supplies due by treaty to the proud Cheyenne tribe in their barren desert reserve, the starving Indians have taken more abuse then it's worth and break it too by embarking on a 1,500 miles journey back to their ancestral hunting grounds. US Cavalry Capt. Thomas Archer is charged with their retrieval, but during the hunt grows to respect their noble courage, and decides to help them. (imdb)

Some scenes are very beautiful, but the movie moves at a snail's pace. Stewart and Widmark both seem tired, and Ford's direction seems tired as well.

It's nice to see Ford make a self reflexive and revisionist film, attempting to atone for the depiction of native people in some of his own films. But alas, it's a slow and boring burn, and strangely broad. What's up with the extended comedic relief featuring Jimmy Stewart?

With his heart definitely in the right place, you have to give Ford credit for a humanising take on the Indians who were stock villians in his earlier pieces. However this doesn't prevent the movie's agonisingly slow pace from being a major liability, and a tired performance from Widmark channeling John Wayne not helping matters. It wouldn't be Ford if we didn't have a left field slapstick set piece, but this one featuring Stewart is appalling, and undermines the sincerity of the enterprise.

This would have gotten a perfect score from me, but I got real frustrated that there were no subtitles when the Indians spoke. It left part of the story hard to follow. Great movie though.

An enjoyable, humanist portrait of the Cheyenne from Ford. This film contains some of the most beautiful shots of Ford's career--some of the sequences seem painterly even. In that sense, the film is a real treat to look at. Widmark's world weary cavalry officer offers the film some complexity, for though the film is about the Cheyenne's trek north to their homeland, Widmark is the central character, narrating the action as we go. A solid final western for the master of them.

Viewed June 17, 2019. Ford's last western - a majestic, glacially paced work about the inhumanity of the Cowboys vs Indians story that helped to define the genre. While there's a certain beauty to the images, the film is sort of shapeless and develops no momentum, and perhaps doesn't do enough to counter the genre's stereotyping of Native Americans.

Not a masterwork, but there is still plenty to admire for fans of Ford. Its flaws are obvious: uneven performances, misplaced comedy, a shoehorned role for Stewart, and a slight timidity at times when engaging its central subject. Nothing in it tops the opening scenes where the tension between the Cheyenne tribe and the white soldiers is extremely palpable despite the lack of explicit conflict, but the cinematography is striking, and its portrayal of Native Americans was a step forward.

A sympathetic treatment of the plight of the Cheyenne as they attempt to escape languishing on a reservation, shot in Ford's typically admirable style. I would rate it higher, but Richard Widmark's pursuit throughout was carried out bewilderingly. Not to mention an odd interlude, in which Jimmy Stewart plays a comedic Wyatt Earp, does not fit at all with the rest of the film.

Jimmy Stewart in Dodge City episode in the middle feels completely out of place, like they just cut in 30 mins of a different movie!

John Ford's last western is a huge epic telling of this largely true story that looks wonderful, but sinks under it's own weight. Widmark is serviceable in the lead role, but his character is opaque. You're not really clear about his plans or motives until really the last act. Patrick Wayne is, as always, a terrible actor and he's in far too much of this. Carroll Baker is good as a Quaker school teacher who accompanies the Cheyenne, but it's a pretty thankless role.

Poorly constructed. The Jimmy Stewart portion is so out of place that I literally checked to make sure my DVR hadn't accidentally cut off and resumed recording a completely different movie. The film is also preachy and contains lots of bad acting.
