Kind of like the dramatic equivalent of Meet the Parents. You never really get a break from awful event after awful event, and you can't empathize with any of the characters. At the end, I didn't know what to take away from this.

Relentlessly brutal domestic melodrama with some interesting historico-political observation and quite a few memorable moments.

Despite a nearly 150 minute streak of Beat Takeshi kicking the crap out of everyone/thing in his vicinity this all comes off as rather boring. The main problem being its focus is all over the place with a far-reaching narrative of several decades, but limited focus on all the characters and situations we come into contact with.

None of the characters have any real depth and Kintano, as much as he is on screen, seems wasted in this role. This was a grim, plotting, one-note movie that well made failed to really interest or entertain me in any way.

Jesus Christ that's what I get for going 'oh Takeshi, I'll watch that' without doing any research. It's a pretty movie, and well-made for a period piece. Which of course is negated by the endless existentialist horrible fucking protagonist. An exercise in watching a person be despicable in all ways for 2 hours. If it's 'based on a true story', I hope the guy got the shit beat out of him a few times in his life.

Throws you in between desperation, violence, mutilation and roughness, not a pleasant experience for anyone, but surly enough intense. The godfather on speed.
