This tragic tale centers around the ill-fated love between Baptiste, a theater mime, and Claire Reine, an actress and otherwise woman-about-town who calls herself Garance. Garance, in turn, is loved by three other men: Frederick, a pretentious actor; Lacenaire, a conniving thief; and Count Eduard of Monteray. boring-as-shit melodrama that probably inspired a U2 video or two. if elaborate art direction didn't save the recent Cats reboot, it sure as shit won't save this. (from your life.) 'what is the role of art?' might possibly be the most french question anyone ever asked. and unfortunately, the most french answer, too. if you suffer from a disease called 'i'm not sure whether film buffs are stupid', this film will cure it.

I've seen so many describe Les enfants du paradis [Children of Paradise] (1945) as poetry. It's not. It's ordinary soap opera. Love triangle double-up, with just as hollow characters as Hollywood and rather overrated considering how many calls this one of the greatest films ever made. Thankfully, this was a good overrated creation with a ton of ambition, stylish sets and a likable bunch centered around this lady and the theater. Vibrant and cleverly set-up. Never gets dull even if few climaxes.

I have a few minor issues (use of Blackface, unsatisying ending, unclear motivations for one of the characters), but on the whole, it's a beautiful, engaging & thoughtful film, that's far more mature and nuanced than its contemporaries. Arletty stole in the show in her role and all of the theatrical elements were fantastic; in fact, to date, it's best film about the theatre I've ever seen. It's impossible to watch this film and not come away with a newfound appreciation for the art of pantomime.

In its softly focused images, lovesick vernacular, and theater-scoped performances, Children of Paradise is classic form. It is consummate, multidimensional, not lacking a sense of humor, and with something to say about the imitation between life and art, but despite these virtues I still find this film a bit of a stuffed-shirt square.

A remarkably nuanced and "modern" film considering both the time of production and the era in which the story is set, with relatively complex (albeit still archetypal) characters and thoughtful, engaging dialogue. It does err on the long side, and it doesn't completely escape the vague sense of stodginess amidst all the costumes, but that said it's remarkably proto-"meta" about life-as-theater-visa-versa, with the staged melodrama consciously spilling over into "real" world drama etc.
