The movie focuses on the plight of ten war orphans hailing from different cities across Japan. With nowhere to go, they scavenge around train stations, scratching out an existence by means of black market work for a one-legged tramp whilst avoiding being picked up by the police for vagrancy. Soon however, they find a more inspiring role model in the figure of a nameless soldier just repatriated after the war.... (imdb)

(note I don't think there is a crisp, clear copy of this ancient but it is good enough) For a lot of this you think "ho-hum, Disney with a bit of bite", then you come to the climb the mountain scene - superbly shot and *********king (obfuscated for spoiler). Forgive it's age and watch it. Visuals of a land and scrabbling way of life, both long gone, are priceless.

Great slice of life film set in Japan following a group of orphaned children with a WWII soldier. The movie starts out cheery and optimistic, but the journey they go on has a variety of ups and downs along the way. Really solid stuff overall. Tackles good themes of the aftermath of war and also acts as a time capsule due to the very close events of WWII. I wish there were better visual quality versions of this.

Thank God the war is over. That means that Hiroshi Shimizu can go back to making adorable children's pictures again! Here a film centering around a bunch of war orphans traveling the countryside to see what the future brings, and the adventure is pure Shimizu! Simple, naive and adorable!
