Like a woody allen film or Modern Romance but written and directed by a woman. So of course it’s not as funny but it does have an understanding of the romantic male psyche that most men will not be able to pin down. A sad, melancholic movie. Perfect for the holiday season.

Takes the usual coastal Semitic neurotic male obsessive “love” movie and brings it to middle America. Love as just an exercise in misery in a way most wouldn’t be comfortable displaying because the director is a woman and truly understands how fucked the dynamics are for love between some men and women they idolize (NOT LOVE). There’s no beautiful city shots like a Woody flick there’s just drabness, boredom and porno theatres. It’s not that it doesn’t still hurt it’s that you get used to it.

a romcom about a man finding himself after a difficult break up, only the self he finds happens to be pathetic with a dose of predatory. its underbelly is uglier than the likes of allen or brooks, but revealed in ways so casual, cheerful and banal that a woefully misguided studio might (did) try to rework it into a syrupy love story--in other words, precisely the kind of delusional fantasy charles is perpetuating. i've no doubt the acutely observant and scathing silver appreciated the irony.

Something ahead of its time. John Heard gets to be a toxic obsessed suitor and no excuses are made for him. A slow unveiling of a troubled relationship with a real honesty to it. A unique drama.
