Concurrent with England's transfer of Hong Kong back to the Chinese, John discovers that he has a rare form of leukemia and has only months to live. So John, his friend Jim, and the disfigured proto-hippy Jean grab a digital video camera and prowl the streets, seeking to document the "real" Hong Kong one last time. (imdb)

I see what writer and director did, but I didn't care much for it - so what's left is a contrived story with too much J.Irons-crap and way too little Gong Li-class. *Preview*: #13#, exp-3*, story, Gong Li!/10, R2.

Ivan /Maggie Cheung is way much better than Li Gong.

Unlikable main character who fills all the annoying expat tropes, with especially cringey narration, probably from the source book. Interesting character played by Cheung. Li is beautiful but not given much motivation or plot that doesn't relate to Irons. What even is the titular Chinese box? Fav scene: the montage of the Hong Kong handover.

Fantastic gritty portrayal of Hong Kong during the 1997 handover to the PRC, with characters who feel like real people. Irons, Gong Li, and Maggie Cheung are all impressive, along with Wayne Wang improvising much of the movie on the spot.
