I generally dislike romantic movies, but this was exception well made. And I love chocolat(e). Ok first I was really disappointed that whole thing was made in english instead in french because just feels "française". But all is redeemed with exquisite cast and superb acting. Although story is somewhat predictable(well who would think that in (romantic) fairytales evil wins;)) yet still watchable and not mawkish at all. And no endless kissing or shtuping. Also soundtrack is quite enjoying.

This is the Avatar of anti-Christian films. By which I mean over-the-top, hamfisted in pushing an ideology I happen to support, to the point that I feel vaguely shamed for my opinions. By the end, I was basically hoping that Alfred Molina would somehow find a machete and hack to pieces the insufferable characters played by Binoche, Depp, and Dench. I'm so glad Depp no longer does these shitty heartthrob roles with absolutely no depth.

I get the appeal - decadent casting and delicious visual design feeding a sweet, small feel-good fable of the melting of men's hearts (sorry). It's just never sat with me well the day after. Every appearance of Molina has the same effect as him twirling his mustache after tying Binoche to Wonka's train tracks shouting, "Renounce Devil Chocolate, kiss my crucifix and just maybe I'll untie you!" It's like buying the expensive stuff and finding out it's made by Hershey's overseas.

A ridiculous story but it works well. You can't help but love anything that tells you that chocolate cures mental illness, sexual dysfunction, anger, can get you a date with Mr Cool Johnny Depp, and tells you religion sucks.

Neat and simple, like any good fable - its archetypes delightfully human and its metaphors incorporated sumptuously into costume and setting. A delicious little tale well performed and designed.

Despite Depp's presence - he's insufferable in this film - this makes for a mouth watering story about the sensuous (and thus taboo) nature of chocolate (yes, it's symbolic). Binoche is perfect as Vianne and Thivosol as Anouk is suitably cute (I want an 'imaginary' kangaroo friend called Pontouf).

I never cared about the woman with the silly chocolate shop, or johnny depp, who's barely in the film and whose character is of no real consequence to the story. Alfred Molina and Peter Stormare are always good.

Beguiling and seductive fable is really a "Sunday matinee" pot-boiler writ large; plot-wise it's nothing we haven't seen before (FOOTLOOSE with chocolate) but is so well performed with conviction by a stellar cast, anchored by Binoche's steely and willful sprite, that it becomes an irresistible experience. Dench, Molina and Depp all match their star, fleshing out characters who could have fallen into cliche.

Slow, almost litterary. Binoche portraits the life of a very strange, yet attractive woman who travels from town to town and starts a chocolatier. Problems are her part and certain people's only wish is to see her move. But then we see that she is not that hated but that the woman and her chocolate brought something special to this little town. Depp too plays a wonderfully romantical role.

Probably one of the most unfairly maligned movies in recent history. I think it's a delightfully well made film with good performances from Dench, Binoche, and Molina. One of the five best of 2000? Probably not, but I certainly don't find it to be the awful film many think it is.

Sometimes I need films like these. There isn't anything offensive, loud, or even very surprising about it, but Chocolat is as sweet as its featured treats, and it brims with sincerity thanks to its fine acting and art direction. It isn't an entirely smooth experience, but most of us know we could do a lot worse than this.

Just about as mainstream an "art" film as you can get, right down to the cast. Seemingly an amalgamation of all the characters, themes, and settings you normally see in movies that are a hit with the U.S. arthouse crowd. I like it anyway. These tropes, unlike many in more normal films (e.g., the "head butt" in action movies), are not cliches IMHO just yet

Rather sweet fable--complete with some heavy-handed moralizing. Gorgeous to look at. There sure are a lot of expensive actors in this for a children's movie. At least, it's so simplistic I ASSUMED it was children's movie while watching it... it appears that may not actually be the case.

This movie is WILDLY predictable, every step of the way, and it's a little bit too long, but some charming performances (particularly from Binoche, Depp, Dench, and - surprisingly - the child actors) save it from not being good. It's likable enough, but the fact that it was nominated for Best Picture is kind of laughable.

It's got a strong cast and visual appeal, but beyond that I'm not a fan. I know it's a light romance but that doesn't mean it has to lack subtlety to get anything across. I felt like the viewer was treated like an idiot - a common theme in most romances - and as the viewer I get pissed off when this happens.

Cute, sweet, but occasionally cringey & lacking in self-awareness. You don't necessarily want a movie to be too self-aware, but when it feels this self-congratulatory and didactic, a little self-effacing humility or a touch of irony shows maturity and balance. Maybe that's just my postmodern, nihilistic Gen X attitude kicking in.
