Chris Rock: Bring the Pain

One of the most explosive and hilarious stand-up debuts ever. Contains many classic bits on race, relationships, and celebrities that I still hear quoted over two decades later.

Moments of brilliance but a little uneven.

You're not supposed to go to jail, you low-expectation-having motherfucker.

Pretty funny, I guess. Not really jokey sort of jokes, but energetically performed comical observations about the usual stand-up comic topics (latest news stories, popular celebrities, fraught relationships, cheating, being black), though they're approached from a refreshing angle. Despite the very outdated events he talks about, his jokes about them are done in a way that's still funny decades later without having to be familiar with them.

Nobody is more incisive about America than Rock in his prime. This works better as an audio album than a film, though.

I was dying laughing at some parts. Other parts were the same old stand-up you can hear anywhere.

I have very mixed feelings about this. The part about 'niggers' is one of the better routines I have seen, but there are parts I found distasteful and dumb.

I may not be the biggest fan of Rock as an actor, but as a comedian, he was absolutely phenomenal when he was in his prime!

One of the great moments in stand up.

Amusing hour of stand-up that doesn't quite hit enough high notes to be a keeper. The section on 'blacks vs. niggers' is certainly memorable, but Rock's overly-squeaky delivery throughout means you have to strain your ears at times to work out exactly what he's saying.

Brilliant, daring, acerbic, and socially relevant humor.

Rabble-rousing and electrifying, explosively good material.

Seen: 2. I understand the appeal, and Rock's energy is infectious, but I just have never considered him one of the greats in any regard. OJ, crackheads, settling down, black president.
