Nan, a racketeer's daughter, is in love with The Kid, a shooting gallery showman. The Kid has no ambitions about joining the rackets and making enough money to support Nan's lifestyle. Her attitude changes after her father implicates her in a murder and she's sent to prison. During her incarceration, her father convinces The Kid to join the gang in order to help free Nan. When Nan is released, she wants nothing more to do with the mob and tries to get The Kid to quit, but she may be too late. (imdb)

Has as strong acting as could be expected of an early talkie, that is it's often bordering on horrendous. The Hammett-based story is servicable but this is mainly worth watching for its film historic merits.

Sylvia Sidney never looked this tough! Gary Cooper.... well, he's tall and handsome, and can handle a gun. But what makes this movie interesting to watch is director Rouben Mamoulian using this movie to experiment and rip off other directors tricks like the inner-dialogue part Hitchcock did in "Murder! (1930)". Lots of cool shots in this one bringing a mixture of styles to the visual story telling. The movie doesn't exactly find it's own style, but it's a fun blend of everything!

In technical terms this obviously an early sound film with an inconsistent soundtrack and creaky pacing and slightly awkward acting even from charmers like Cooper and Sidney. It still works though because of the charm of the two leads and a pretty fun gangster story that makes use of its pre-code timeframe to do some things that wouldn't be possible a few years later .

An innovative early talkie that makes the head spin with experiment. Cooper and Sydney work well together.
