Gripping would be a word used to describe this film. A story that begins as a drug related murder mystery quickly turns into a story of abandonment and acceptance. This film was saved by Francos performance, a good look into what can happen to seemingly good people. Franco is honest, the performance is filled with realism. A good film that feels real and that is all we can ask for from a good film.

Not the finest hour of Robert De Niro. The script is weak and presents another cop who has family issues. I did like the overall atmosphere though.

Bland. It's watchable, but there's not much of a reason to do so.

Gritty. Even though my feelings on it may have cooled, I remember being really glad that I saw this one.

There's just no reason for movies like this to exist. Another cookie-cutter cop drama/thriller.

Gripping? Hardly. Paint-by-numbers DeNiro cop drama. Everything you think happens does. Not worth your time. Luckily Franco would go on to better projects where he could really showcase what he can do.

"Gripping" is definitely not a word I would use to describe this movie.

Good performances from De Niro and Franco. I don't remember much else except that I liked it.

This movie is sunk by an overdose of dramatic irony. (I'm talking about all this past-repeating-itself nonsense that gives De Niro's character a shot at redemption. It's so movie-fake; only a screenwriter could've thought it up.) It all comes to a head in an embarrassing finale in which a blubbering De Niro rambles on about all the movie's themes. Almost nothing is told visually.

High-quality drama with good pacing and a well-balanced mix of realistic characters. Superb ensemble cast acting, and every character who touches De Niro's cop's life seems to be given the perfect amount of screen time. Very few flaws - a hidden classic.

City by the Sea takes what could be a routine, boring, and predictable cop movie into something about the people contained within it, and therefore something worthwhile. It has really good performances, strong direction, a solid script with well-realized characters, and most importantly it takes a genre that can often feel tired and uses it to say things about people. City by the Sea isn't a pulse-pounder, but it works as a reminder of how important parents are to children.
