When a lawyer loses an appeal to stop a logging company from clear-cutting Native American land, Arthur, an Indian militant drags him and the kidnapped logging mill manager into the forest. The lawyer's empty talk about how the company's greed should be punished is put into brutal action by Arthur, who tortures the manager in allegorical ways mimicking what loggers do to the forest. Give Ernest goes to Camp's script a couple more passes and you end up with this. A nasty revenge story, Graham Greene just oozes hatred he wouldnt tap into again until his run as Mr Crabby Tree in the show The Adventures of Dudley the Dragon.

All of the film’s verve is generated by Greene as its mysterious Native activist (who may also be trickster spirit Wisakedjak). But while the project’s overall ambition is admirable, it’s not shot with the visual finesse to become the kind of maddening nightmare it perhaps should be, and the ending fails to wrap up the journey in a way that encourages any rumination over Indigenous rights or the environment. Co-lead Ron Lea is maddeningly bland too.

Graham Greene is the main reason to see this near great flick about how nature will eventually seek revenge. Through Greene, of course. Viewed thanks to Shudder although I think YouTube has a free copy someone uploaded.

It's an unusual little thriller and fairly intriguing to watch, but I'm not too crazy about its representation of Native Americans, whom it milks for every ounce of their fear factor. Whatever political charge this was supposed to bear, if you're spending your time wishing the Indian guy dead it doesn't really help any marginalized voice be heard. I feel Bugajski's talent was wasted on this script.

Stange movie. Haven't seen this in 30 years. Not what I remembered, somewhat compelling but also disturbing.

Graham Greene so thoroughly obliterates this role. He is reason enough to watch the film, certainly one of the best performances of 1991, but the rest of the cast, the direction, the cinematography, and even the use of natural locations are all admirable as well.
