Clemency

Clinically brutal examination of the ways in which our hellish criminal justice system conspires to deprive every person involved in its perpetuation of their very basic humanity in slow motion. Woodard and Hodge are magnificent.

Clinic and solid but also somewhat aloof.

Unbearably contained drama takes a cold, detached view of corporal punishment - rather than adopt a clear pro or anti stance, its focus is how the execution grinds on all stakeholders, from the administrators to the condemned, and even the apparent advocates (via an unforgettably charged (and sad) cameo from Watson). Ultimately this is Woodard's show who delivers masterfully subtle work - she makes the climax crackle, even as Chukwu resolutely withholds a final emotional payoff.

Writer-director Chinonye Chukwu tackles two topics Hollywood often avoids: jobs & women over 50. Alfre Woodard (in a performance that should've won awards) is fantastic--using a great clinical personality that matches the film's methodical tone. The lead reminded me of Condi Rice: a technocrat overseeing inhumanity. I wish some subplots were more realized, but you still get awesome performances from Aldis Hodge, Richard Schiff, and Wendell Pierce. Highly recommended and criminally overlooked.

Not a bad movie more thought provoking then anything

It is very good, but not that enjoyable. It's about a prison warden (who is rather compassionate, smart and hardworking for a prison warden) who supervises executions. The movie focuses on the toll it takes on the warden, and the people around her. It's also good because almost every character is black. It didn't have to be, but the prison warden is a black woman, and almost everyone in the whole movie is black, and it's just no big deal.
