The '90s were a golden age for these smaller, out-of-nowhere movies that broke out and became hits in an exciting way that will simply never be possible again. Despite being maybe the purest example of this phenomenon, it must be asked - does Clerks still deliver? Only about 37 times (in a row).

Does it get any better than this? I want you all to remember when Clerks was made...remember the stuff Hollywood was putting out and calling comedy before it got a lot of buzz, and now see what's come after it. The defense rests.

One of a few movies that I instantly think of when asked 'What's the funniest movie you've ever seen?' It's just as much a part of the grunge phenomenon as any of the music that came out in the early 90s and it reflects the thoughts of a generation of smart, but under-motivated working-class skeptics. There are so many ridiculous lines of dialogue and though the acting is pretty iffy at times, the comedic timing still makes this something special. A significant and influential independent film.

It's poorly acted and full of long-winded monologues, but no matter how bad this film looks on the surface, it's a classic. Kevin Smith's first films that "made it," it was a no-budget film that said what every 20-something in the 90's was thinking. It represented a generation and also gave a great new director his chance to get out there. Really good!

Can be watched any day, anytime. Smith boldly associated his wise-ass story with Dante's inferno. There is no end to the fun in Clerks, one of the reasons I want to shoot mine. Not for the faint-hearted though.

Conflicted writing this review I am. On one hand if I never saw this movie I most likely wouldn't be the film fan I am today. But now that I have seen better movies it saddens me how honestly awful this movie is. Bad dialogue, lame characters, and practically no direction this movie just really isn't all that good. : (

Comedy's subjective (you either laugh or don't) & this still holds up for me almost 30 years later. It's also proof that the most important thing is a great script. The situations & dialogue Smith creates here are probably still his high point. If one wants to dig deeper, one of the reasons this & Smith had cult-like followings is that we rarely saw working class people like this in movies (& less so than ever in our Woke society). Yes, the jokes "offend" - that's the point & why they're funny.

Epic. Undoubtedly one of the best comedy's I have ever seen. There are so many great things to say about this movie : The Dialogues , the story , Jay and Silent Bob , the girlfriend who has sucked 37 dicks ,.... Al of the characters are fucking hilarious. You have to watch it to understand how great it is. Great debut of Kevin Smith who created legendary characters.

5 extra points for the original last scene, which (spoilers!) is begging to follow through on foreshadowing given the spectre of death constantly lingering in the background and the broad reference to the downer ending in Empire Strikes Back. Clerks' lo-fi honesty is only enhanced by its acutely botched deliveries and stumbled punchlines and actors not knowing what to do with their hands, and at its best when the dialogue matches that level. One of the more lasting amateur hours for good reason.

Downright hilarious film. Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson aren't really great actors, they do have certain moments though where they are believable as the characters but an equal amount aren't so great. So why is this movie so highly regarded? The script. This is quite possibly the beginning of mainstream adult raunch humour that's actually really witty. I don't think Kevin Smith has a particular directing style but I'll be damned if his dialog isn't hilarious. Highly recommended film.

As bad as subsequent Kevin Smith films could be, his debut feature remains charming and winsome, a sample of everything a homegrown independent film should be. Strong characters, humorous and thoughtful dialogue, and all-around collection of good scenes. A Waiting For Goudot-like account of being a 20-something going nowhere.

It was made for $27500 and probably half of that was spend on weed and other sedative drugs. Any group of friends with this much drugs and a camera could have made this. It didn't felt like you were watching a movie but more like a bunch of different sketches bundled with the same underlying theme. And the overacting of Dante and Randall were also not helping to forget the painfull editing. ... Watch the different sketches on their own and it will be hillarious but as a movie clerks is %$é2"

A really really independant flick. Kevin Smith is God. This is still the best Kevin Smith film because of what he went through to make it and how raw it is. I love this movie. This is one of my all time favorite flicks. Sadly, Smith will never be able to get out from the shadow that this movie casts, no matter how good his other work has been and will be. To be fair the pre-digital era low budget filmmaking dedication is laudable, and it's amusing when you're 15. But as an adult, it's just not funny anymore. Annoying characters being dicks to each other, spouting "profound" dialogue is not a good time, and it just feels puerile and mean. Did adults make this? I don't know. A few moments that work keep Clerks watchable, but not enough so to save it.

Has a very spontaneous, almost documentary feeling to it. Yet as it progresses, one also feels the tightly yet subtly knit threads of the story. A funny and at times bleak look at the lives and future plans of uneducated suburban youth with a little too much male sexual humor, but I guess it's okay.

The most punk rock of all the successful Gen-X films that received attention during the heyday of American indie cinema. The low key, scrappy visual quality works wonderfully with the material, and the characters and dialogue are so engaging that the relative crudity of the general direction doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the overall experience. If you have ever worked behind a counter in food and/or retail, many of these scenes will ring painfully true.

Why didn't I like this movie? After all of this hype it sounds like something that I'd get behind, but I found the acting and the writing both sub par. Both seemed forced. I never believed that these people were real characters, I believed that they were actors delivering lines that were written with excruciating precision. This is my third Kevin Smith experience, and every time I've expected the film to change my opinion of the man's films. I'm still not seeing it.

When I was a kid, the fact that a whole scene could be anchored by and centered around a conversation about Star Wars blew my mind and warped my whole perception of dialogue in movies. The repertory theatre performances somehow make the dialogue sing (especially Jeff Anderson) and even the minimal production and black and white photography just works. I don't care what Kevin Smith backlash emerges, I will always love this movie to death. Thank god he didn't use the out-of-place original ending.

I can see this movie 1000 times and it never gets the old. The fast-paced and intelligent dialogue between Dante and Randal, around which the entire movie is based is excellent and considering the little amount of money and resources Smith had to make this movie, it ought to have won an Academy Award. I can't wait for this year's long-awaited sequel.

Clerks has some funny moments, a good moral at the end, painfully boring direction, and some of the most deal-breaking bad acting I've ever seen. Clerks is a very remarkable landmark in the stoner genre. Aside from the fact that most of the money was for weed, crack and other illegal drugs, Kevin Smith has proved after all these times, that he is a smart and undeniably intelligent master of comedy. Amusing, low-budget and although poorly acted, the entire film is anchored and driven back up the charts by the smashing, throat-throbbing gags that will leave most in stitches. Classic.

It's low-budget, doesn't have any acting whatsoever, and a thread bare plot. But the dialogue is often witty (I personally like the second half a lot better) and the ending has a cool moral side to it about people complaining when they're not willing to change and are comfortable in their own decadence. I think the fact that the flaws in acting and production actually strengthen it's honesty and realism.

Clerks was funny. Simple as that. I laugh quite frequently while watching it, and that's really the only mark of a good comedy. Is it offensive and overly vulgar? Yes it is. Does that make it unfunny? No it doesn't. It lacks coherency and had a few characters that didn't need to be included, but it felt natural thanks to the actors not feeling like they were acting (most of the time), and ended up being quite funny.

Making a feature film on a shoe-string budget is hard and Kevin Smith deserves a pat on the back from his Mom, absolutely. But the acting and writing in this is so bad it's a deal-breaker. Every exchange between Dante and Randall is painful. It's like watching high schoolers in an english class read lines from a play at the request of their teacher.
