Closet Monster

I hope this score does not make me a homophobic.

Story goes nowhere.

From what little I knew of this film prior to watching, I thought it would be an Araki-esq surreal orgy coming of age film. It has some of that surrealism, but is fairly reserved. Surprisingly the surrealism didn't veer off into unrealistic depictions of relationships or self-discovery. It had just enough spice to ensconce it outside of typical "gay interest" film, and instead depicted a teenager dealing with an unstable home life as he graduates high school. I live for Buffy. Great soundtrack

Thoroughly winning blend of lgbt coming of age tale, talking animal buddy comedy, hard-hitting portrait of a volatile father-son relationship and body horror. With striking camerawork and a catchy score, this is impressive.

Often visually stimulating but held back by overly blatant symbolism and dull characters. The dad is the exception, Aaron Adams plays the self-centered paternal figure to perfection, and is the highlight of the film. Overall, it isn't bad, but relies on using violence as a crutch to overcome lacking some emotional depth.

It's not a bad film, but it doesn't have much substance either. It's very simple and easy to digest. It's nothing terribly new or clever, but also isn't completely devoid of character, if that makes much sense. The characters are mostly likable. The smooth editing and Jessup's nice performance are the film's strongest assets.

Now this was some quirky queerness even I could get into.
