The bastard child of Godzilla and Blair Witch delivers solid suspense, characters, scares, and a cool monster. It's such a fundamentally simple film that it's not really worth a lot of analysis or additional viewings, but for a one-time pulse-pounding thrill, it's solid. Also, Lizzy Caplan is my new movie girlfriend and I am in love with her.

The first 15-20 minutes which feel more like a teenage soap-opera than a monster film are annoying to get through but once you do the movie is well worth it. The handy-cam style, if you can stomach it, really adds to the realism of the film. The acting is naturalistic, for the most part, with some minor quips. The film is very well put together and obeys the rule of "what you don't see is far more scary than what you do." Certainly one of the best monster flicks that's come out in a while.

This Movie was my personal surpise 2008...everyone told me this Movie is bad, so I've waited for DVD release. Afterall I was really angry because it might be a great evening in Cinema. I disagree with all negative Criticks.. this one is much better than Rec or other hand camera Flicks. It's really thrilling and creates a great "end of the world" atmosphere. It was my first BlueRay buy, and watched it 3 times by now.

The final act borders on ridiculous, no, it IS flat out ridiculous but up until then it's a good old fashioned horror romp filled with stupid characters doing stupid things. Oh and the "hidden message" at the end of the credits is just another tame marketing gimmick.

Great suspens movie. It looks like a nightmare in New-york and in the beginning you don't know what happen exactly. Only Americans can make such movies with plenty of visual effects. First I was thinking of 9/11, a sort of terrorist action but then later on we see the creature, 91 meter high, unbelievable !!!

Reasonably well-done and entertaining for this type of fare. One of the things working in its favour is that the filmmakers were clearly aware that it was a good idea to keep it short. Clearly and shamelessly sets out to capitalize upon both the imagery of the Twin Towers attack and the anxious state of mind of the post-September 11 epoch. The movie does not claim or possess sufficient significance, however, to warrant being terribly offended about this. Those who detest shaky-cam should avoid.

Never before has a monster movie, a genre mostly limited to cheesy effects and big dumb lumbering destruction of models, evoked a feeling of absolute terror. Cloverfield does best in spotlighting the human side of things, far more than any King Kong or kaiju film ever has. It wasn't flawless by any means, but it definitely fit the bill of being what it set out to be and doing it with believability. Also, the 1st person perspective really does work; it isn't shakycam hell like Blair Witch.

As great as it possibly could be. Is it the greatest thing ever? No. Does it accomplish its intent in the best possible way? Yes. 80 minutes of gripping intensity. Great job. Michael Giachianno's "Overture form Cloverfield" over the credits is fucking incredible also.

It was awesome. The monster was really cool and now that I know the story behind it it's just that much cooler. Competent acting and camera work that makes you feel like you're there, along with some inspired scenes (horse and buggy for example) created an incredible atmosphere. I had loads of fun watching this and since it's short it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Supposedly all shot through the lens of one of the characters' compact digicam, Cloverfield is a novel hybrid genre movie: Blair Witch Project meets monster flick. It works; fast-paced, high on thrills and scares, great fx. Sadly, it's also geared towards the lowest common denom. in that it's a love story and populated with preppy kids with zero character, pretty to look at but interchangeably boring - the fodder type. I guess with a winter-blockbuster some things are a given. It's still good.

Surprisingly good. I didn't like the plot they had going on, but other than that it was just a bunch of fun. And I think the character POV worked pretty well, much more so than that scene from Doom (to say the least). A little better than your average popcorn flick, and I'm glad that it brought monster movies back in a good way. And "Roar!" by Michael Ginoccio that played a minute into the credits is AMAZING.

All-around decent. The film worked BECAUSE we didn't have the stupid scientist/military expert/genius highschool student telling us how the monster's biology could be turned against it to save the day -- I would've had to shut my brain off. But with this, you don't know what's going on in the beginning, and you still don't know by the end. Excellent. If anything, I would've liked to see LESS of the monster and more of its path-of-carnage. Up the mystery!

If Godzilla channeled the nuclear anxiety of post-Hiroshima Japan, Cloverfield uses as its inspiration the chaotic, fractured media coverage of 9/11 to strike horror into audiences. (It's surely no coincidence that the lead is moving to Japan.) It's even bolder than Spielberg's War of the Worlds, and while that film considered the incomprehensibility of tragedy on a massive scale, Cloverfield hits you with personal loss. Not bad for a 73-minute creature feature.

Saw it at home so didn't get the Wow factor the visuals looked designed for. Definitely liked the change of pace from normal monster in city films. However, the wibbly-wobbly camera starts to make the brain ache, plus this is one advanced camera to have nightvision and and an unending battery. In summary, quite good, not sure what the fuss is about.

Not a particular good movie, but the experience of watching it at a cinema boosted the score a bit. It's completely terrifying at moments. It's a good showcase of the human side of a monster invasion. No scientists in white coats to save the day by revealing the weakness just at the end.
Probably the best monster movie there is, which doesn't say a whole lot.

It's certainly a unique monster movie. Thecamcorder style filming was done well, and immerses the audience. There are scenes that are extremely tense, there's a lot of humor, and the filming gives it a strong sense of realism. But honestly, even though it did everything right, it needed more monster. There are great scenes, but theyre separated by stretches of shaky running and cowering in dust. Cloverfield is as good as can be expected for its concept, I'm just not sure the concept worked.

Once in a great while, a film will grab me, shake me, surprise me and not allow me to forget it. "Cloverfield" is one of the movie experiences you don't forget. There's something very human about it - the filming technique, the characters, and the quick glimpses of terror. Extraordinarily clever marketing aside, the filmmakers actually deliver a product better than anything a preview could tease us with. I loved this movie, it's an easy early choice for one of the best films of the new year.

A thriller that explores how we increasingly view horror through the remove of a visual medium. If some called its appropriation of 9/11 imagery exploitative, that's only because it's so effective. Unlike the other horror blockbuster to have done so recently (War of the Worlds), Cloverfield at least has the courage of its convictions. It ends the only way it could, yet it tempers its nihilism with the notion that the accumulation of small moments of happiness can stave off the approach of hell.

It's so hard to find a unique movie these days. This movie would have just been a regular monster movie, but the handy-cam aspect made it seem real and an amazing experience. I am all for Cloverfield, which possesses one of the best viral marketing campaigns I have ever seen. This flick begins my celebrity crush on Odette Yustman, who I put on-par (at least) with Megan Fox in the looks department. The 'shaky'-camera work was brilliant (though I often am not impressed with the style), and it sports an inspired, brilliant monster design, concept & execution. The scene with the white horse and buggy legitimately gave me chills. A very complete film with no fatal flaws.

Difficult: what do you give a movie that's above average and impresses you by doing so very much with so little? But wait, what if this film also gives you a headache b/c of the most unnecessarily hyperactive use of the shaky-cam ever? I honestly felt a bit nauseous by the end and had to look away from the screen. If you don't mind watching the most dizzying cam ever (many don't &I hear it's more palatable on the small screen) you might want to pop 2 dramamine & "enjoy". And you give it a 75.

Cloverfield's strengths are its unrelenting pace, action and fun. It's well shot and for the most part the cast do okay in terms of their performances. The film does have a real feel of dread & anticipation about it. It's a shame it has two major weakness. First is the blander than bland "Dawson Creek-esq" cast, who are solid enough actors, but are boring people. Second is the disappointing end sequence. The final 15 minutes or so are misjudged & seem out of context to the rest of the film.

Good idea transforms into a decent enough monster flick. Lots of hand-held confusion meets endless amounts of dialogue like "Oh my God!" and "Holy shit!". Seems to me that Americans have a strange tendency to invoke the lord when they're either scared shitless or having sex.

Textbook example of good idea, bad execution. Good idea: A giant monster movie, from the perspective of normal people caught in the middle. Bad execution: Those people are self-absorbed caricatures of millennials - impossible to sympathize with, even and especially as a member of that generation. There were a sprinkling of interesting moments, mostly to do with the monster, and flares of characterization and humor. But there have been so many better personal-monster-experience movies made since.

Pretty good considering it's a foundfootage film. While that's a dead genre by now, Cloverfield is one of the few foundfootage movies with great visual effects and a story that keep you interested and wondering throughout its short runtime. Its a pretty well-done movie overall and the alien aspects aren't special but they're still cool to say the least.

The found footage style is done very well, and the scenes with Clover are incredible. But why did they have to put one of the most annoying characters in history in charge of the camera?! "Cloverfield" has no soundtrack, no back story, no subplot, no narration. We stay with the group as something attacks Manhattan. Even with the handheld camera gimmick, the production values are impressive. Even at a brisk 82 minutes, "Cloverfield" comes close to wearing out its welcome. And some of the hand-heldshots defy the conceit of the film, unless somebody taped the camera to his head. Nevertheless, I had a lot of fun with this inside-out take on the monster movie.

A novel idea, but promoting a movie the same way one promotes a TV show like "Lost" fails on a lot of levels. It would have been better as a standalone type project like The Blair Witch Project, because when you let out a bunch of information as supplemental to a movie but still give no concrete answers, all you do is spawn an annoying group of pompous fanboys/fangirls that need a kick in the throat.

The hook is as irresistible as it is simple. You can almost hear the pitch echoing faintly on the soundtrack as the film unfolds: "It's Blair Witch Project meets Godzilla!" Reeves does a solid job of structuring his shots so they convey the necessary information while believably being created by someone in the midst of the action. The screenplay is less successful at providing a compelling reasons for our band of thinly-drawn protagonists to continue charging deeper into the fray.

A big chunk of my points go to the technical excellence and realism of the concept production here, as there is not much going on in other aspects. Characters are not realistic, not fun or likeable (especially the 'camera guy'), the plot is messy and ridicilous at the end. Many complains but I can bare with the shaky camera, just don't use it every second movie made!

Not as Drama Club as you might think. Too slow to start, but once Kong's at the gates it picks up the pace. It may take itself a little too seriously though. CGI was spotty at best. They also killed off the only character I kinda liked. [Rifftrax hits the nail squarely on the head. Gives the MTV generation the bashing it so richly deserves.]

Cloverfield is so repulsive its nauseating (literally!). Whats even the point of making a giant monster movie if you only focus the story on the boring, privileged, and cliched 20-somethings trapped in the situation? Conceptually the whole found footage/shaky cam thing is a great idea, but its also a gimmick that could never carry the entire film on its back. It constantly feels lacking caused by its own stylistic limitations. oh yeah and FUCK SHAKY CAM!!! YOU CHEAP VISION-LESS ASSHOLES!

Don't really mind the lack of story, and actually welcome the change from the Hollywood "gots t'splain it fer th' audience in a montage" style of storytelling. However, the acting is fairly sub-par and the fact that the guy can, for the most part, keep the camera straight and upright the whole movie, despite climbing over broken buildings, running from creatures, etc. is pretty ridiculous.

A fun popcorn flick. It could have been more worthwhile if the dialogue and acting wasn't so awful and the characters weren't so painfully thin, but those aspects are simply much more apparent with a movie that is filmed in a realistic manner. In fact, at times the visuals were almost eerily practical. Other times, not so much. That said, I think this movie would be incredibly enjoyable in, say, IMAX format.

Parts of the movie were "jump out at you" scary, but others were just suspenseful. The shaky-cam shots were sometimes headache-inducing, but it was well worth it to see this movie in theaters-- you just can't get the same feeling on the small screen. I'd also like to mention that the overture was really well written, very fitting for this movie.

I liked the concept. Unfortunately that brings with it horrible camera work. Also didn't see it in the cinema, so lost some of it's big-screen 'wow' factor for the effects and excellent sound. Also, it starts incredibly slowly. You could easily have cut 10 of chaff out before we get down to business. Overall? Not bad. Not worth the hype, but not terrible either.

Hopes were high for this mysterious marketing behemoth. No one really knew what Cloverfield was about but everyone wanted to see it. Without a doubt, Cloverfield lives up to its lofty expectations and in most ways exceeds them. One of the most refreshing and unique movies in decades, Cloverfield takes monster movies to new heights by using a level of realism unseen in virtually any movie before it. It will be hard not to remember this vividly for years. It's truly remarkable.

Lived up to the hype in theatres, but loses value on subsequent viewings. If you think the concept sounds cool (a monster movie docudrama, like Godzilla captured live from the street), you'll dig the movie, as it's executed as well as it possibly could be. It's a thrilling flick with a straight-forward message, and an awesome original monster. There's lots to like (our POV cameraman is literally named HUD), but it's missing something. Despite the bigger budget and effects, I prefer [REC].

WAY better than that last Godzilla flick. GODDAMN that was one FUGLY ass monster! Ending was a little weak, but how really should it have ended? What irks me was the fact this was an SD card from the video camera yet the whole movie acted like it was video tape. Re-recording over magnetic tape yelds the results shown in movie with snippets of previously recorded material showing through during cuts, but digital recording formats do not behave that way.

What could have been a cult classic was let down by a terrible plot, poor dialogue and uninspiring characters with whom the audience shares no empathy. Once you get past the nauseating party scene, introducing characters you really don't care about, the "shaky cam" gimmick actually begins to pay off. The action sequences, though rare, were exciting, but there just wasn't enough there to compensate for the terrible script. Entertaining, but I wouldn't recommend it.

If there was ever a movie made for theater viewing and only theater viewing, it's Cloverfield. The first 20 minutes are a bit contrived and just lame, but once the first rumble kicked in, I was completely immersed in the sense of urgency, crisis and doom that this movie pounds out. Where this goes one step further, becoming more than just a horror show, is in the scenes between Rob and Beth, shot a few weeks before, that bookend the mayhem. That the opening and closing moments, depicting the idyllic morning of and late afternoon that he took her to Coney Island, are in such sharp contrast to where these two characters' approaching fates ultimately end up is devastating. In the short time Cloverfield is on the screen, it manages to do pretty much everything it needs to. It doesn't waste time, clocking in under 90 minutes, but it makes use of almost every second. The shaky-cam doesn't usually break the immersion level, and the acting is quite good, especially because they actors are mostly a group of unknowns. Regardless, Cloverfield delivers an adrenaline packed thrill-ride, which makes me really hope nothing decides to attack my city.

Suffering from poorly written characters who are also acted horribly, this giant monster survival film is hard to root for. The script is a mess. The film is nauseating, especially when the shakey-cam effect employed is created digitally in post-production where it becomes assaulting to the eyes. The concept provided here is genuine and creative but the lack of payoff in regards to potential is downright sinful. On a side note, the monster's design is also flagrantly uninteresting.

What sets "Cloverfield" apart, aside from its unforgettable marketing campaign, that's had more than a hand in how films and their consumers interact today, is how wonderfully grounded it is. Unlike almost every other found footage film, nothing happens throughout that is too unbelievable to stomach, a ground level depiction of a city-wide disaster that humanises your typical monster movie scenario through sadness, loss, and fear. Stomach churning, original, terrifying, and brilliant.

Cloverfield is a one-note movie to be sure. To Kaiju fans it will be a thrilling new viewpoint for the action. However as a horror film, or the event film it was advertised to be, It falls a bit short and a little to shaky and boring at times.
