They travel trillions of light years and they want old people and Steve Guttenberg. Advanced civilization my arse.

It kinda works for a while - the alien part, at least - but by the chase at the end I was sick of it and wanted it to end.

This is the movie that inspired Phizer to make Viagra. Wilford Brimley is perfectly cast as an old man.

Worth watching, if nothing else, for the old dudes trespassing, talking about each other's penises and going breakdancing at clubs. Apart from that, it starts out seeming cheesy and lame, but the further into it you get the more you start to like it. The special effects are mostly good, and sometimes outstanding. There are some fairly excellent scenes and I cannot see how anyone can dislike the movie by the end of it. Guttenberg isn't right for the part, it's hard to take him seriously.

The second half is really drawn out for no discernible purpose, and in general plot developments are rather underwhelming, but it's still a sweet little film about old people with a sci-fi twist.

I remember really liking this when it came out and I was nine years old. It has definitely lost some of its charm. Overly sappy and predictable. I will keep the rating higher for nostalgia's sake.

A great blend of genres! I think this movie does deserve the hype and long-lasting honor it's received. It's not the best movie ever, or my favorite or anything, but it is very well done. It's sweet, funny, clever, touching.... There's a few things that didn't entirely fit, but for the most part I really enjoyed it!:D I now feel a little better about my movie history knowledge!;>

For a movie with no villain and very little conflict, it is charming in its cast of likeable characters (Gutenberg excluded). A little sappy, but harmless if you like that sort of thing.

For some reason I really thought this was going to be a horror movie. I mean, aliens coming in from another world, dropping their cocoons in a human settlement... But nope, it's all a pretty family-friendly alien invasion. Who would have guessed.

An interesting sci-fi tell starring Guttenberg. By the way whatever happened to him. He was good in his prime and he seems to have just dissappeared off the map. The story is well put together and very intriguing. It has an excellent cast and is thought provoking. A whimsical tale of love, loss, and adventure.

The biggest shock I've ever gottten in a movie wasn't the shower scene in Psycho, the Chestburster scene in Alien, the hammer to the head in Tx Chainsaw Massacre or the hand reaching up in the end of Carrie. No it was when that lady peeled off her skin and and looked through the peephole. Sure I was around seven when I watched it, but still...cocoon by Ron Howard gave me my biggest cinematic scare of all time...

Ron Howard directs with a lot of style clearly attained from his mentor at the time, Steven Spielberg. Cocoon is loaded with sweet moments and goofy comedy moments. Although they sometimes clash with the human drama the script seems to be relying on. The veteran actors all carry themselves perfectly, the camerawork is smooth and clear. The mythology may be a little outlandish, but the movie avoids pointless exposition and keeps things easy enough to follow.

Kind of a heartwarming and laid-back weirdo drama for about half the film - well shot and with some fun turns - but the ending is botched in pretty spectacular fashion. It builds up to being a solid parable about selfishness and excess, but then in true 80s style just gives up and appeases those attitudes instead. Guttenberg is randomly thrown in for the sake of Yoof Appeal and completely at odds with the rest of the film. Pretty bad but not offensively so. Needs remaking with a proper ending.

No matter what it's about, no matter the mood, no matter how it's made, every Ron Howard movie is usually like any Ron Howard movie to me. Well done, relatable, entertaining - not in any way I'd write home about, but not too little, either. Genuine. This is the only one so far that went a little further (of the five movies I've seen, I should add), that has a little magic to it, and I like it. Not that the other ones usually leave me cold, but...this just had this little extra something.

Hokey and sentimental fantasy made agreeable and memorable by a first rate cast of ageing legends (especially the dream teaming of Ameche, Cronyn and Brimley), though with the exception of Tandy and Cronyn's touching scenes together, the women seem to get less of a look in than the men. Loses steam whenever an out-of-place Guttenberg shows up (as a crumb to the "youth market"?) and Gilford's intense sad-sack seems to have wondered in from a different movie!

Senior people in the lead and benign aliens make for a welcome change on the usual alien invasion movie,... well actually it's a Fountain of youth story. Good writing and a great cast make this a fine movie. The symbolism of the ending is too on the nose tho.

It was sweet and I liked Brian Dennehy's performance a great deal. The problem was that it just didn't end. Every time I thought the credits were about to roll a new plot line popped up from nowhere which did nothing but take away from my enjoyment of the film.
