Spectacular representation of the civil war, and was technically great. The story itself is forgettable.

Overblown, and too sedately paced, there are moments of brilliance such as the battle scence, but these are matched with moments of awfullness, Zellwegers terrible "it's raining" speach. Has the distinction of providing one of the worst best supporting actress oscar wins in the history of the Academy.

This thoroughly bored me. It's like Gone With the Wind with less questionable politics, but also less of the things that save that movie. The story falls short of the epicness it seeks, and at the end you're left wondering why anyone thought the story deserved such epicness to begin with. And what's with all the stars in the cast? While they mostly do good jobs, it's nothing but distracting when you're constantly thinking "oh hey, there's Natalie Portman" or "what's Giovanni Ribisi doing here?".

Tries way too hard to be epic and meaningful and moving when it's really none of these things. Great production values and acting don't make up for sheer worthlessness, they simply make it watchable crap instead of unwatchable crap.

Jude Law really works. Best portions of the film. The stuff with Kidman and Zellweger, though. They start off ok, but most of their section of the movie does not play well with Jude Law's sections. Movie is almost fantastic, but not quite, because of this.

Has an epic quality, but the relationship between Law and Kidman's characters seems very forced. Renee Zellweger's character offers some comic relief, but not enough to completely salvage this film. However it contains beautiful cinematography from John Seale and a wonderful score by Gabriel Yared.

An elegant mess. Individual scenes are better than the whole picture. Jude Law is incredible in a very masculine lead role, while Nicole Kidman stumbles in a miscast part. Renee Zellweger shapes up weaker scenes with an outrageous and lovable characterization.

Selects the correct aspects of the overlong novel to transfer to the screen and slight changes improve on the original source. Some changes, however, are not welcome. This is Law's turning point as an actor in my eyes.

Anthony Minghella's intimate romance film was poised by the public to be the one to beat in 2003. It didn't quite turn out to be the disaster that many films before [and since] became, but it certainly wasn't among the most widely praised movies to come out. Its because Cold Mountain is different from any other Hollywood epic in the sense that the characters are like something lifted out of a dream, and its capture of a now mythic American landscape is like something out of a dream. The best

By the end of the film, I feel like what I saw was ultimately worthy of the time it took to watch it, and I would recommend it to those who haven't seen it, although I do feel that there is an element of distance that keeps this from being one of the great war romances -- Gone with the Wind it ain't.

Good, not bad, not great. There's better Civil War-set movies out there, but this one is worth a cheap rental if you like the actors involved. Renee Zellwegger is almost "too" good in her role in the backward farmer's daughter.

Some of the battle sequences are cool, but about halfway through the movie stops with those and sticks with the horrible romance. Jude Law is unremarkable, and Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger are possibly the most annoying acting combination ever, but Philip Seymour Hoffman is hilarious.

One of the reasons that the name "Anthony Minghella" is synonymous with the word "pretentious". Thoroughly nonbelievable "love" story (between this and _The English Patient_, I suspect that Minghella never had a relationship with a woman that lasted longer than 24 hours in his entire life), slow pace, and that one line -- "You couldn't imagine a wedding" -- that stands out in my mind, years later, as a classic example of dialogue that's supposed to be poetic but totally fails

The battle scenes and scenes dealing with the war's effects on people are awesome, often times in a brutally realistic way. The rest of the film doesn't distinguish itself from other romance movies other than it being set during the civil war, and is often tedious. Overall only really worth it for the battle scenes and Philip Seymour Hoffman's hilarious performance.

Brrr..... The movie does do a good job depicting the history of the Civil War and the effects it had on America. The movie doesn't take everything from the book which is probably a good thing since it is over 2 and 1/2 hours long. I had a hard time buying Zelwegger's role in this film. I think I have seen too many of her chick flicks to believe she can pull this off.

Beautiful landscapes, incredible movie, but the acting left it a little flat. It is my understanding that during the civil war americans were fighting and not the british. As a matter of fact I don't recall one american actor in this movie. Of course that should not hinder my judgement, but seriously this movie could have used much more attention. It is long sometimes boring but its scenery and plot are admirable.

Cold Mountain became Hot Mountain when Jude Law decided to teach Nicole about the birds and the bees. Still, beautiful cinematography with a well-executed direction, brutal battle scenes and absorbing depiction of life and war in a bygone era, with an equally compelling soundtrack. However, Renée's redneck accent did get on my nerves to the point where I wanted to stick my nails into my eardrum and bleed to death.

There is no way I can give a single point to this POS, based solely on the ending of the film. I actually enjoyed the movie, all the way up to the end. It's the fact that I enjoyed the majority of the movie that leads me to hate this movie. It's not like it was just bad all the way through. I'd probably actually give it a point or two for that. I just can't believe someone would actually think this is entertainment.
