It's a really creative and unique film, and whilst it is rough around the edges, it's the type of genre-bending film that should rival films like "Get Out". The film takes an unexpected turn and takes it from a film where you worry about where it is headed, to a completely surprising and satisfying finale. Performances are all great, especially from the two leads, and perhaps one of them in an unexpected way that catches your attention.

Conceptually pretty interesting, but not particularly well executed. I wasn't engaged with the pair of spoiled "loser" characters who both needed a reality check. The controlling robots plot device could have been taken just about anywhere, but what they did felt too childish, obvious, dumbed-down. The acting was just ok and in general the movie did not at any time have that magic spark that makes me sit up and take notice. Vigalondo can and should do better.

Points for creativity but it doesn't stick the landing as well as something this conceptual needs to. I liked the magic realism until they had to go and explain it with some nonsense sci-fi. Why do we need an explanation for Hathaway's connection to the giant monster? Just let the weirdness be weird! Also, as an aside, I never thought I'd see the day where Jason Sudeikis outperforms Anne Hathaway. Then again, his character was better written so it's not really her fault.

I love weird films like this, which follow their own logic so well, and wasn't surprised to find out it was directed by the guy who did the excellent Timecrimes. It's smart and funny, and all the weirdness actually ends up meaning something. The only bad choice was to set the destruction in Korea; the flippancy with which the film accepts Asian deaths borders on racism.

It's a weird blend of a movie - a sort of psychological suspense/thriller that is really not that heavy, therefore I'm not sure it's hitting its psychologically thrilling points very well. It's definitely not a sci-fi/fantasy movie which I think the marketing bills it as. The acting is fine, Sudeikis particularly plays the part well but the premise of the story is just sort of left-field weird and then it just uses it as a lens to tell this character drama.

This is an interesting one. It kicks off as a slow drama exploring the effects of alcoholism on one character, branching out to revolve around multiple characters in a Sci-Fi mystery... still exploring alcoholism. Might be the most original thing I've seen all year. Investing performances from Hathaway and Sudeikis - the latter of whom has a satisfying arc into a total sociopath. He is genuinely unsettling in the film's back-half. The black comedy was hit-and-miss but this is worth the watch!

Great concept, but none of the characters are particularly likable and the sharp tonal shift from the first half of the movie to the second half of the movie is jarring to say the least. The movie ends up being mediocre and more style than substance, which is unfortunate, because I am a huge kaiju fan and hoped to come out loving the movie, and was left without feeling much of anything at all at the end.

Wildly unpredictable w/ solid performances that ground a kooky idea, it still doesn't satisfy. The film's defenders will call it a "surreal fairy tale" 2 try & sidestep the fact that this narrative film that presents itself as taking place in a world of realistic human emotion & motivations, has 3 giant plotholes where characters make inexplicable choices: why not tell the authorities & cordon off the park? why do the Koreans fail to evacuate that area? & how does the lead know what will happen?

You gotta give it to the movie, it took a completely unexpected turn when a somewhat weird comedy with well-known comedy actors became this dark even weirder middle-aged man crises thriller. Definitely loved the development! The ending was okay, but I suppose a more sinister approach would have been better - Gloria to stay there and be his prisoner forever like domestic violence works. In any case, people - if a monster is reoccurring in your town - don't stay there, especially in its vicinity.

I heard a snippet about this and managed to avoid learning anything more. I think doing so helped my appreciation of the film. It's a bizarre and unique combination of a reasonably sub par melodrama and ... Asian kaiju combat ... It deserves to be seen on that alone. Unfortunately the execution is far from perfect, and this is a comedy?!? (dark or otherwise I didn't find this amusing) but other than that it's something very different and worth a watch

Starts quirky comedy but makes an immediate abrupt shift into grim darkness. The shift is so out of left field it took me 10mins to stop bitching about how the turn wasnt foreshadowed & that the tonal shift while interesting for its shock and narrative risk just didn't work right. The character in question goes from too vanilla to too extreme, too radical in his narcissistic destruction. The ending is good but the themes too heavy handed, like the shock shift the entire film lacks subtlety

As outsiders, it baffles as to why victims stay with their abusers. Colossal, with its bizarre and unbelievable plot, takes this notion and gives it a one hundred foot creature to inhabit. A film that brilliantly makes you think it is one thing and then comes in and pulls a 180.
