Unselfconscious 60's style techno dystopia with a B-movie feel and cheesy acting. Has impressive set building and all the movie technology tropes of the time - computer banks of blinking lights, robot voices, computer printouts! The dull acting is somehow enjoyable and consistent with the style. Challenges us with our human contradictions: how is peace achieved with bigger weapons...? Why do we pursue technological advancement without forethought and at the cost of our freedom and privacy?

An unapologetically cheap and totally rad Cold War techno-thriller, COLOSSUS gets down to brass tacks: we created an AI so powerful that it immediately started to dominate us. There are a few lofty ideas stuffed within this bizarre yet prescient B-movie, all wrapped within the consequences of humans creating a god in their own image.

Colossus is like the dumb narcissistic cousin of HAL9000 which is given total control over USA's nuclear arsenal. The story behind this movie sounds really fun, but the execution is very poor. The pace is so off and a lot of things are way too childish to believe them..."hey let's give total control over our nuclear arsenal to an untested artificial intelligence without the possibility of taking it back"... sure. On the good side, the design was good. This is a bad 70's movie.

Strikingly minimalist narrative in which technocrats deal technocratically with what they can only understand as technocratic problems, semi-accidentally creating a literal technocracy. Better than anything James Cameron ever did. Because James Cameron is shit. One of the writers went on to direct THE CHINA SYNDROME.

A delight to discover. Colossus combines a Supercomputer Gone Rogue concept with cold war paranoia, with satisfying results for fans of old school not-too-far-fetched science fiction. It's very bare-bones, but concepts like this don't need a lot to get off the ground. The lighter moments don't really mesh well with the general tone, but the delicious gut-punch ending makes it easy to overlook those. I wish we had more movies like this nowadays. ...And now I feel old. Great.

The idea is great, combining cold war politics and some hard sci-fi. I guess I was just hoping for a little bit more seriousness. The film suffers from the awkward comedic scenes. Otherwise I really enjoyed it.

An intelligent Cold War drama that refreshingly shows the USA and the USSR to be two sides of the same coin. Colossus gives us the perfect enlightened dictator, who has all the information in the world available to him, and it still isn't good enough. Ultimately, the movie suggests that humanity should quit making excuses and "passing the buck".

A surprisingly unsensational sci-fi drama for its time, COLOSSUS begins with the completion of the titular supercomputer, followed by the revelation that the Soviets have created their own identical system. The machines go rogue and unite--holding the world hostage against their whims. Joseph Sargent's sure-handed direction helps, faltering only (as the film does) when it tries for light-heartedness. Adequate acting; striking production design and cinematography (lost on the full-screen DVD).

Colossus - The Forbin Project is one of the really intelligent early "AI computers taking over mankind" stories. While the graphics are completely non-cyberpunk, the story certainly has enough to qualify as a pre-cyberpunk flick. On top of this, Colossus is well acted throughout, and the pacing is such that you stay riveted to the story. Eric Braeden (Professor Forbin) and Susan Clark (Dr. Cleo Markham) are especially good together.

Relentlessly bleak sci-fi that's very much of its time. The movie starts with an ominous tone and the tension continues to rise as all the worst fears of that generation are played upon and then realised superbly. Great performances, some subtle satire and a fantastic ending.

Very much of its time, the cold war. Everything about the look of the film screams 60's sci-fi - the blinking-light computers, the fantastic sets, the modernist architecture, even the opening credit typeface. Enjoyable and thought-provoking.

A thought provoking, witty, intellectual, terrifying and above all bleak 70s sci-fi film. They just don't make films like this any more, they come from a time in history where people actually had a point to make using the medium of science fiction, not like now where it's all about some bullshit blue aliens cat things and a vague message about peace and harmony. No. This is proper sci-fi. If you played (and finished) the game Deus Ex, you really need to watch this film.

A very seventies sci fi movie. They don't make them like they used to, probably because we don't expect nukes to go over every minute.
Good stuff, a little dated though.

Daft but entertaining parable about the construction of a super-computer that outstrips human control and deifies itself. Flawed, not merely in that it was written before the true possibilities of processing power were realised, or that no-one thought to just unplug it, but rather that not nearly enough is made of using human irrationality to combat logic. Nevertheless, some excellent acting from the leads and subtle and effective touches throughout.

Another one where you're better off reading the book "Colossus" by D.F. Jones.
