It is never a good idea to try to realise all of your desires; everyone get's hurt, but most of all yourself. As well as a tragic story, the scenes of lumbering (spectacular!) and the dismantling of the saloon in Iron Ridge (chaos!) are highlights for me (compelling and entertaining). Arnold and McCrea both play the 'gruff but loveable' type very well (Glasgow Jnr. being more refined), but it is the vulnerable yet determined nature of Farmer as the the two Lottas that stays with this viewer.

Hawks and Wyler's halves of the film complement each other in a lot of ways, but the tonal differences also hold the film back. The struggle of conflicting personal and professional desires is explored in an interesting manner, but the payoff feels more slight than it should.

Uneven, but absorbing. Edward Arnold and the unfortunate Frances Farmer are both very good here.

It feels more Wyler's than Hawks', but Come and get it -- the line to get people to eat; the last scene is giantly tragic -- benefits from its amazing sense of historical depiction as a storytelling resource -- we start in 1884, with deforestation making Barney rich, and end in 1907, a different time for this activity and therefore for the characters' lives. An error from the past -- Barney married the wrong girl to make money faster -- makes things worse as time goes by. Brennan is a delight.

The first half of "Come and Get It" is a buddy film with a bigger than life character in Arnold. The second half has lots of cringe moments as he sets his sights on his friend's daughter.

This was a interesting film. First off it shows off the early days of lumbering with a documentary style trip through the production system. Then there was the main characters. Two rather old guys in Edward Arnold & Walter Brennan as bosom pals that gets involved in a cool silver plate bar brawl and meet saloon girl Frances Farmer! Arnold falls in love, but decides to marry into money instead, something he'd regret the rest of his life and sets the dark tone for the movie.

Good. The cast does well with Oscar winner Brennan the standout.
