I got myself into a happy place before tackling this, and was able to enjoy it despite its numerous issues. I don't think it'll have the longevity or charm of its predecessor, but there's enough here to pass the time. Daft fun

60% references to the first movie, but those are unfortunately the best parts. A series of scenes strung together with little impetus moving it forward. Assassinates Akeem's character by making him a worse father than his own with no explanation. At least the music is good.

While I might go against the grain here, but after having re-watched the original just before watching this one, while this sequel might be astonishingly late to the party, it still holds up to about as good as the original. The real entertainment here comes from just how many people were actually rounded up to reprise their characters.

The original was amusing enough but didn’t leave a lasting impression, whereas Coming 2 America has some egregiously annoying moments that obscure many of the amusing ones. It’s a film that purports the problem with privilege is the people that hold it, rather than the system behind it. African-American culture isn’t black culture globally. There are also too many flashbacks, shoddy CGI, and a lack of originality. Jones is awful; Amos slightly redeems his character; Hall is the MVP.

This movie is fun. Normally I'm pretty critical of everything but through some combination of nostalgia, musical numbers, and attractive people who aren't total idiots I forgot about all that film theory stuff and just enjoyed a light romp of fun.

I'm amazed that the original cast was united almost in its entirety thirty years on, including 90 year-old James Earl Jones. But the charm is expectedly gone. The cameos and winking references add nothing, and the premise is a blend of belated sequel cliches - something between Rocky 5 and Borat 2. The dialogue is unfunny and monotonous, basically a handful of stale or regurgitated "bits" surrounded by elaborate setups.

Nostalgia. I enjoyed it at first viewing but the more I thought about it, the more issues I found: The drugged rape. Making fun of African stereotypes instead of the differences with African-Americans. The lack of progression in 30 years from a maverick prince with 3 daughters. Lisa taking a smaller role despite being so capable in the first film. I love Leslie Jones but she and Jermaine Fowler weren't likeable. Fav scene: unveiling of the circumcision ritual, but not the actual execution.

Coming 2 America: Wasn't really a fan of the first. I laughed more during this one than I remember laughing during the first, since it stayed relatively consistently funny throughout opposed to the first one which did not. But it's still not a great comedy, it just has the occasional great joke. Everyone's trying and it's obvious they're having a blast, so that joyfulness does radiate on the screen some. Better than the first.

(Viewed on 7/03/21): Imagine if the Doobie Brothers were black and reformed decades later with special guests and some of their kids. This is that film, or at least close to it. Murphy sleepwalks through it, and there is a real dearth of laughs. The idea of a female heir is fine, even if it conforms to the politics of the day, because it fits in more broadly with the rejection of tradition we saw in the original, but nothing interesting is done with it, and the new characters add little.

Love the original so much, and that's why some of this lazy nostalgia kinda wins me over -- the barbershop gang, the dirty preacher -- and I find myself inclined to overlooks its flaws -- no comedy, just a bunch of stray gags. That said, I love Leslie and Wesley and the post-Wakanda vibe. It's just too bad it all seems so badly shot and imagined -- as Matt Lynch has pointed out, this has the looks of a sitcom -- as well as poorly written -- Coming 2 as merely a mirror of the original's greatness

Eddie. Eddie, Eddie, Eddie. Playing 10 different characters in one movie wasn't funny 25 years ago when you did Nutty Flubber... that shit hasn't gotten any better. Not good. I'll never get those 90 minutes of my life back either. Shame on you.

This is a fun revisit with some old characters. There are a bunch of laughs in this comedy sequel. There is a large ensemble cast who seem to be having a blast. Overall if you liked the first film then you should check out this one.

Brings back good memories of a childhood favorite, but wasn't exactly funny on its own. I'll take it as a reunion party. Great to see all the old faces again reenacting the same old jokes of the first one. They barely had to rework the Coming to America (1988) script.

Low rate well deserved here. Good actor skills (not always), but poor direction and very few funny parts. It's a no. And... I found it sexist, in the opposite way. If the first movie was sexist because, you know, the naivety of the 80's, this one has no excuses. If the scene where you discover "how" he has this child had the role M - F inverted... just imagine. But ok, let's ignore that for a moment: there are a couple of scenes really gross, for me at least. Lastly, the story itself is weak.

Bloated, self-indulgent sequel putters along on good spirits and handsome production design; it’s been 30-odd years between drinks, but this ironically feels like an 80s era instant slapdash sequel hastily cobbled together to capitalise on a successful product. Murphy seems bored, and Fowler can’t compete with even Murphy’s worst day; it is fun to see virtually all surviving cast members rounded up to reprise their roles, and (Leslie) Jones has a ball with her no holds barred characterisation.

The movie is bad, we all know it so let's move on. The movie is also fun for the most part. Yes, all the new additions, aside from the eldest daughter and Wesley Snipes sucked but all the callbacks and cameos made me smile. The flashback also put a smile on my face but they also reminded me how bad this one was and how good the original one still is. I might end up watching this more than once but not anytime soon.

Kind of disappointed here. Nice story for the sequel that makes sense, but the laughs just weren't there, for me.

This was disappointing. I watched the original movie for the first time just before seeing this (although I had seen parts of it many times before) and that movie is just so much better than this one. There are elements I enjoyed from this, but it just wasn't as fun as the original. I think the PG-13 rating may have dragged it down too.

I expected to hate Coming 2 America but found it to be surprisingly entertaining. At this stage unnecessary sequels are commonplace and I tend to wish they hadn't bothered but while the central C2A storyline is weak the characters and performances are enjoyable. With frequent call backs to the first movie, C2A will go down well with fans who aren't protective of the original and just want to have a good time. Personally, I laughed frequently and isn't that ultimately the point in comedies?

A Coming to America sequel in which Eddie Murphy disappears for lengthy chunks? In which bland younger actors make no impression and Leslie Jones does her obnoxious act to the hilt? This was always going to struggle and we should, I guess, be pleased that there are a few scattered laughs, and a warm and welcome cameo from James Earl Jones, but - and this is stunning for a 33 years later sequel - it feels terribly rushed and unpolished. Pointless.

The first 15 minutes of this film were a fun nostalgia trip. After that, the story just got boring. Worth watching since it's free if you have prime, but don't expect greatness. Somehow Arsenio Hall hasn't aged a day. 2 stars.

Certainly no gem, but I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would after seeing so many who panned the movie. Some fun, some laughs, some nostalgia as with Blues Brothers 2000.

Passes the time but the set-up and comedy is as middle aged and slovenly as Eddie Murphy's career in the early aughts.
