Coming Home

An extreme tear-jerker, saved from mawkishness by good taste and careful grounding in reality. It has rare moments that come off as slight stretches, but for the most part, Coming Home is credible in its relentless, heart-rending sadness, which makes it pretty awesome, I thought. First-rate photography and editing, and Li Gong's killer performance surely contribute to this.

Heartbreaking account of a couple separated for decades and when reunited the wife has lost her memory of her husbands face. She pines for his return, but her traumatic illness makes her unable to recognize him. The years slip by and he takes whatever role he can to remain close to her.

The first twenty minutes are a masterfully made, fast paced thriller about an escaped prisoner. After this bravura opening sequence the film shifts to several years later when the prisoner finally returns home and finds that his wife no longer recognizes him. It's an odd structure because it's about the cathartic reunion that doesn't happen, that keeps not happening for the rest of the movie.

The visual storytelling in Coming Home is so effective that the subtitles aren't even needed to be invested in the characters and their relationships.
