A little above average for this kind of tale of retribution, perhaps, but the characterisation and dialogue are a little lacking, the themes are conveyed in a slightly unsubtle way, and it somewhat runs out of steam. Nevertheless, there are enough unusual situations peppered through the narrative to keep the viewer paying attention for most of the duration, and as usual the New Zealand example still seems somehow superior to whatever would be the Australian equivalent. Why is that, really?

It's expertly made for a debut, and gritty, but it's hell-bent on antagonizing the viewer with its nihilism - which may appeal to Michael Haneke fans but I find grating.

With a grueling, tense, first twenty minutes, I thought I might have been in for some real torture porn, here, and while that's not my forte, I probably would have liked it more. In reality "Coming Home in the Dark" is more of a muddy, inverse revenge flick with only enough story for about half of it's run time, which is pretty disappointing coming from a New Zealand horror movie.

Although this has more the feeling of an intense drama rather than a horror, it certainly starts off in the horror genre with an uncompromising way to begin its story. Things get even sweatier with most of the film taking place in the car, showing enough diversity of shots and character perspectives, as well as the drip-fed revelation of one of the victims. As engaging as that is, the two duos (of victims and villains) could've been more convincing, or even more iconic.
