Commingled Containers is often interpreted in light of Brakhage's health problems at the time, and is considered to represent the director's own spiritual quest.[3] Scott MacDonald describes the film as "a talisman that expresses Brakhage's determination to continue his spiritual quest and to offer viewers something of Light, despite his fear of mortality, for as long as it was given to him to remain in the flow of life." As much as I love some of Brakhage's work, I must admit that a lot of his films bleed together in my memory. But this one has always stuck with me. Such wonderful, stunning technique, a breathtaking work of beauty.

On the "By Brakhage: An Anthology" DVD there's an interview in which Brakhage admits that this film grew out of him wanting to test a new camera before the warranty ran out. As such, this is even more random than usual for Brakhage, but I still enjoyed seeing it

Another beautiful and mesmerising short from Stan Brakhage with the motif of water. Said to have been a last tribute to nature from Brakhage when he had to undergo cancer surgery, although he would live until 2003, it would have been perfect final work.

A love letter of sorts to nature, life, and the eponymous "containers" that make up these things. It was intended as a possible final film from Brakhage if he died during a medical procedure he was going to be undergoing the day after he completed it, and it would not have been a bad film to end his career on, as it is definitely a great one.

Capturing the refracted light in water and in containers, this is an astonishingly beautiful film. It was meant as a last tribute from Brakhage to the natural world which leaves him in awe in case he didn't live through bladder cancer surgery the next day.

Hmm, maybe he's not a hack? I have such a wide range of emotions when I watch Brakhage's shorts. Some of them I absolutely hate and others I find aesthetically pleasant. Few have much of an affect on me regardless. It's confusing. My gut feeling tells me I like this one a lot, though, which is a rarity for a Brakhage short that's under 6 minutes. It's sensual and fluid.

Deeply brooding, verging on apocalyptic. Makes good use of various simple effects, I would've really liked it if it relied on them a little less.

Somehow it both gives me a feeling of awe for nature, a great aesthetic pleasure and at the same time a huge feeling of contamination maybe because of the bleakness of the images, great movie.

Rain and lightning, the sky and the clouds and the heavens above, the rushing waters beneath, and all the other attendant majesties under creation.
