I really appreciated this film by G.W. Pabst and the way it covered all angles in the political and personal aspects of the post-World War 1 dilemmas between Germany and France. There is no lead actors in the traditional sense. Just many different characters and stories and how their experience of this miners tragedy at the border occurred. It's really a multi-dimensional story and really gripping.

Beautiful, somewhat allegorical, story of camaraderie among the working class miners of France and Germany. There's an obvious socialist bent to the story, but it's secondary to the human drama and the exploration of conflicted nations once at war and now in an uneasy peace. The lingering effects of those tensions on the individuals and the way you can sense that the world surrounding them moves separate from them are very well displayed.

The film's heart is definitely in the right place but it's not done with very much nuance. Pretty much everyone is a great guy and pretty much everything turns out okay, and it just doesn't have the dramatic tension that it should. Part of this may be due to some odd pacing, a common problem with early talkies. However, it's a real knockout visually, featuring some absolutely stunning camerawork, especially down in those claustrophobic mines. Technically impressive but a little on the dull side.
