Having not liked this in 84, I thought a rewatch would suck. So maybe low expectations helped me like it more, but the truth is that except for the monster costumes (which are GOD-AWFUL) this is a decently made Conan flick. The comic relief never works, but the story does & the locations & sets look fantastic. What would've made this better is developing the supporting characters: give the princess her own motivation (like her brief desire to learn to fight) & some inner confilct for her guard

Call me crazy, but I genuinely don't feel this was any worse than Conan the Barbarian. There's probably some lower production values and wonkier performances maybe, but I felt this was an easier watch. It had a Lord of the Rings-esque adventure trip feel. There's a less serious approach to it with a comic relief character added in that isn't all that funny. I did like one fight sequence in it that felt like a Video Game Boss, and there's a big monster too. All in all, could be worse.

Not as good as the original but still one of the better fantasy movies of the decade. It would be a lot more enjoyable if the comic relief thief character didn't exist, as every single thing he does or says is unbearable.

It's above average because Arnold is in that loin cloth. I'm not even gay, but I'd watch a movie about him drinking tea if it involved these outfits.

Surprisingly bright sequel to the ponderous original done in the style of a Saturday morning cartoon show. Schwarzenegger makes Conan more likable this time and Douglas, as usual, makes for a smooth villainess, but the one to watch is Jones in her screen debut. Flashing a magnificent smile and dashing about with abandon, she handles her warrior woman role with style and aplomb and alone is worth the price of admission.

Only the 1980's could have produced a film this awesome, even if it's not as good as the first Conan. Arnie looks like he could literally eat babies for breakfast in this movie... and to be fair when he gets loaded in this film he does have a go at it. Grace Jones should be in more films... horror films would be best. She scares the shit outta me, and I have a strange urge to find out how hard she could punch me.

Let's be frank here, the first one was not a masterpiece (on a whole) so I wasn't expecting anything too amazing. Even so this movie simply let me down. Instead of being an at least inspired production, like the first, this one turns into a dreaded sequel cliche' playbook. Wise crackin' side kick? Focus on action at the expense of the (little) integrity of the first? Check. Obvious (and unfunny) in-joke references to the first film? Check. At least the soundtrack was good.

Good entry in the category, we have no idea why the predecessor was successful in the first place, but let's make a second movie! Dumber overall, annoying and unnecessary supporting characters, and “humor” that seems childish and doesn't fit the tone of the settings. Arnold is still strong in the role and the story is better than its predecessor but that's it. I would rather watch some of the "bad" Conan knock-off movies than the second “real” Conan ....

A definite improvement on BARBARIAN – a much lighter and less ambitious effort, a sort of “boys own” adventure mixing in wizards and mysticism, while also giving Arnie room to play to his natural strengths in dead pan light comedy; also helped by his gaggle of good-natured sidekicks, especially Jones who rides in on a wrecking ball of manic energy and basically walks away with the movie. The creativity in the specifics essentially balance the ultimate familiarity of the journey.

The story is way better than the first one. We see far more from Conan's character, something the first movie lacked a lot, and finally even some of the side kicks got interesting. This is good enough that I can recommend it to fantasy fans, I would still say to Schwarzenegger fans to choose something better, but the fantasy part works decently, and hell, if you managed to suffer through the first one, definitely watch this.

It's... okay! From its reputation, I expected this to be a blight on Conan's good (?) name, but while it doesn't have the artsy ambitions of its predecessor, it's a kind of generic but basically enjoyable D&D-ish adventure. And Grace Jones lights up the screen every time she's on it. If you like 80s fantasy quests, you'll probably have a reasonably enjoyable time with this. (But wow, it really did not need racially unfortunate cannibal savages. On screen for less than five minutes, but still...)

A step down from the original mainly due to the watered down rating the film holds. Sword & sorcery flicks without excessive amounts of women in clad dressing, fiery language and a fair amount of gore and violence just doesn't cut it as well. The genre begs for an underlying macabre tone - that's why some of the classic animated S&S flicks work so well despite the lack of nudity and profanity. Not that the original Conan was miles better, but still The Destroyer feels too soft.

Big fan of the first Barbarian entry, but while there is some fun to be had with this much lighter in tone sequel, it's clearly inferior in just about every way. Would still love to see an R Rated King Conan feature to cap off the franchise with Arnold recently suggesting it's still a possibility.

Very cheesy & nonsensical but quite unintentionally funny & charming. Too bad it destroyed the promising franchise by misguidedly attempting to appeal to a younger audience, making the original seem really edgy and serious by comparison. Instead of Howard's writings, the primary inspiration for this seems to be the 80's comic book series. The score is still epic though and some of the photography & miniatures are just fantastic. The costumes are barbaric in the cheesiest (best) way.

Conan The Destroyer is regarded by many as a dreadful sequel to a cult classic. I love Arnold but personally the Conan character has never done anything for me. So this sequel never dampened the original for me. But this is undeniably severely worse than the original. The tone is much more childish and comedic here and the supporting characters are incredibly annoying. And other than another decent score and some hilarious Arnold moments, the wrest is dumb and forgettable stuff.

First Conan movie was a moderate commercial success and this time studio tried to make more commercially appealing product by toning down violence and adding more humor. Like most of the time this made the film less interesting and more forgettable. Production values are lower. I had fun watching it, but unlike Barbarian, this film holds no artistic value. Schwarzenegger's character is simplified, and it's only his charisma that pulls it.

A complete cheesefest that craps all over the original's melodramatic pomp-filled glory. This is just a glorified game of D&D that plays it for not-very-funny laughs. Arnie and, especially, Grace Jones just about carry the movie but it's a very poor sequel. Still the second-best sucker-punching-a-camel movie around though.

The inverse of Conan the Barbarian 2011, more or less. That film is slick and professional but ultimately charmless, this one is oozing with 80s fantasy cheese and both the corniness but also the guilty pleasure fun associated. Wilt Chamberlain, holy shit! It suffers from a much weaker score than the original, though. There's also a slightly creepy bit at the end where Arnold kisses a 14-year-old actress on the mouth. Why, Arnold!

Even though I found Conan the Destroyer to be better than its predecessor, it still wasn't a great movie. It was too predictable and often too uninteresting to be worthwhile, but there's also some fun to be had. The action scenes actually feel like people are hitting one another, Schwarzenegger was a less awkward actor, while not having Conan be anything more than a hunk with a wish to kill others was a good decision. It just wasn't great. It was a better movie than Conan the Barbarian though.

The action is boring, nothing thats ever said is interesting, the enemies like stupid, I mean the wizards beast that he created was doing Wrestling maneuvers to conan as though they were in WWF. and grace jones...why? the virgin girl was annoying as hell, the entire movie squealing for someone to come get her. the sidekick needs gutted. the only truely cool part is the god that gets awakened. Otherwise, this movie is shit.

Unfortunately I believe this is what people think of when they remember Conan the Barbarian. It's a complete deviation from the serious nihilistic world of Robert E. Howard and the tone of the first film into some "light" swords and sorcery style fantasy. Conan falls flat in this and it seems like the focus was more on comedy with some rather annoying people in the cast.

Plays out like a piss-weak Dungeons and Dragons campaign. Really lost that epic scope that made the first film, though ridiculous, fun and exciting. I will admit that the ending, which suggests a possible sequel which never materialized, gave me a small thrill. If this movie didn't shit the bed so hard, we might have had a good fantasy trilogy.

It follows in the 80's tradition of ensuring that all sequels are considerably worse then the first in the series. It pretty much guaranteed this by adding a considerable amount of comic relief but they forgot to make it funny. Any movie with Grace Jones is also stuck in the 80's time capsule.
