Overly stylized and smugly told, both of which maybe in an attempt to hide the fact that the messy story, frankly, isn't good. The soundtrack wasn't half-bad.

Nothing short of incredible. Its style, content and delivery will divide opinion, but what I experienced was a visceral, intense and shocking revenge masterpiece. Too many great scenes and shots to list, but the opening monologue in particular was fantastic. Full of great performances with a stunning use of sound and music, this will go down as one of all time favourites.

I really wanted to like this movie. The subject matter is rife with potential. Unfortunately there were too many melodramatic moments for me to take it seriously. The editing had me laughing at some moments. It does have its moments, like the powerful climax combined with post-rock music. This could be a great film if it took a nice good dose of subtlety.

Torn about this one. It is certainly an interesting effort... but I can't help but feel that this is overdirected to the point of absurdity. Perhaps fitting to its theme, the story feels like it's written by a troubled high schooler who fancies himself to be "deep", and the visuals, while striking, share much of that same MTV2 sensibility. While this made it hard for me to really get into the film, it's bravely harsh and free of any truly sympathetic characters, while still being entertaining.

Amazed at what I just experienced. A misanthropic masterpiece. Not many directors would dare start a film with a 30 min monologue, but it thankfully, Nakashima did, it's almost the best part of the whole film. Can't say much more, speechless.

Too nonsensical to be coherent, and too bleak to be entertaining, this film lacks essential qualities such as realism, self-awareness, sympathy for the viewer, and redemption of its characters. And I don't, and never will never care enough about some murderous teenagers, to willingly follow such an overly complicated narrative.

The critical love is astounding. Confessions feels like something a high schooler would write, there's no storytelling pull like in the Korean vengeance trilogy. As a result there's a distinct lack of humanity, all the characters come off as cold or evil ciphers to engineer violence and comeuppance. Even the visual flair feels forced.

The first act is perfect, the rest is just a bonus. It's a really cool Park-chan Wook vengeance type film with amazing cinematography.

I came out of this film thinking that there was at least some substance to go with the (incredibly over-bearing) style, but the more I think about, the less convinced I become. The characters are all fairly generic and it relies heavily on predictable twists and clichés (his mother didn't love him enough... ugh). The episodic narrative and the lack of a sympathetic central character didn't help either.

Wow. This movie was awesome on a level I did not anticipate. I enjoyed it immensely. It's complex, stylistic, violent, philosophical, suspenseful, emotional and so much more. Visually, it's absolutely beautiful. Its use of slow-motion is fantastic. Yeah. I loved it. Highly recommended.

Arresting, sickening, and a visual powerhouse. The first 30 minutes of the film are so good, it takes the rest of the film to shake off -- which also means you're distracted enough to ignore the film's later, slight tonal deficiencies. The social angst here is like a punch to the face.

i like this film more when i try to think of it as Nakashima's really really sick shoegaze mixtape. although it is certainly a quite focused film compared to his other works, i find myself liking it less each time i watch it. i've seen it three times and probably won't watch it again.

Certainly original, both in concept and execution, though the themes have been dealt with better and more consistently elsewhere. It stumbles as it tries to stretch things out from slightly over the top to totally ludicrous, but still pretty entertaining.

There's certainly no shortage of murderous, violent, angsty teenagers in Japanese film, literature and comics. But Confessions transcends that trope, as a stylish revenge thriller that proves to be a worthy challenger to Chan-Wook Park's vengeance films in this little corner of Asian cinema.

A brilliant study of violence and its repercussions for all involved. Confessions is a fascinating, unpredictable, and wonderfully satisfying. Featuring amazing performances from the entire cast, an effective soundtrack, and some truly shocking twists. An underrated, overlooked, and it demands to be seen. I absolutely loved it.

The first 30 minutes are fantastic and the highly stylized but brilliantly told revenge story holds the viewer captive until the final half hour or so, where it just goes completely overboard in explaining its point, drowning in a puddle of patos.

While it goes without saying that some will accuse this film of being "unsubtle", "overwrought" or "lacking sympathetic characters" (that's not the kind of film it is trying to be), it makes no sense to this viewer to suggest that Chan-wook Park's silly trilogy forms some positive contrast in this regard. Even if this film is perhaps a bit too rock'n'roll, the intrinsic interest of the themes, assuredness of the direction and clever use of truth and lies all make this by far the superior effort.

"Kokuhaku" can be pretty awe-inspiring at times, what with its complex plot, abundant violence and beautiful visuals. Organizing the script in various people's confessions and going back and forth to retell the story isn't something that has never been done before, but the prowess of the material and the directorial style ensure it's done in a compelling manner. Personally I could have survived with a little less exposition and slow motion but "Kokuhaku" remains a powerful experience.

The strength of the incredible first 30 minutes or so of this film were enough to keep me going as it slowly lost the thread throughout the rest of it. All of the sympathy I felt for the characters felt tainted by their astoundingly inhuman response to personal tragedy, which they justified through speeches that felt like a confused stab at a depth the writer didn't quite grasp. Still, it's stylish as heck and the soundtrack is incredible. I don't regret watching this.

the most boring 30 minute start to a film in the history of cinema. If you manage to get past that then good luck to you, this reviewer had better things to do with his time. We've only got one go on Earth, one life to live - don't waste it watching this. I'm not sure there's an 'Up it's own arse' collection on Criticker yet but if so this one's a shoe in for inclusion

I don't know what to make of this. On the one hand it has some of the best visuals I've seen in a while (the explosion scene is incredible), all-round good acting, even from the child actors which is very rare, and, for me at least, some harsh moral ambiguity. On the other, it's completely style over substance, the narrative is unclear and far too erratic, and is too Japanese for it's own good (30 minute opening monologue followed by a musical number). Interesting yet flawed.

Brilliant. The directing was immense, switching between slow motion shots of beatiful urban scenery and fucked up kids going wild. The ending was fantastic, it brought the whole thing together, brilliantly tied up all the loose ends and to be honest, I didn't see it coming. Worth watching for the first 20 minutes alone.

The acting seamed a bit cheesily over dramatic and often very unnatural. Other than that, the story itself is an entertaining one, will definitely kill some time but honestly there are others of its like that are superior. feels sort of .....cheap in delivery. seams like it could have been a much shorter, punchier hour episode of a tv show and would have been better for it.
