The way the mystery unfolds is confusing, and in the end somewhat unsatisfying. The film keeps returning to the real estate office... over and over again. Hitchcock knew to either keep things moving to build excitement, or keep it all in one location to maintain a claustrophobic tension. But you can't have it both ways. It's like a train grinding to a halt every 5 minutes. Despite this, the film is certainly worth watching for those wonderful little Truffaut moments.

At first I thought this was a throwback to something like the *Thin Man* series, but the film actually reminds me more of 70s/80s detective-romance TV series like *Hart to Hart*. The leads didn't really have great chemistry, imo, and the acting seemed, well, on par with a detective TV shows. The film also has a TV production values, which I didn't really care for.

A brilliant and stunning picture.

The beginning if this mystery is muddled, the development is thin, Trintignant just goes through the motions and there's little chemistry between the leads, but the spirit is lighthearted, the black and white photography is sharp, and Fanny Ardant's remarkable face and magnificent legs--and of course the director's obvious love for her--make this last film of Truffaut's linger pleasantly in the memory.

A pale imitation of pale Hitchcock thrillers, with some amateurish glitches such as a corpse conspicuously moving its eyes around. I don't think I've ever cared less who the murderer was in a murder-mystery movie, and there's a vague attempt at humor which falls utterly flat. By the last act it gets almost unwatchably tedious.

Truffaut's last movie is supposedly Hitchcock'ian detective story, but I didn't get any of Hitchcock's vibe at all. The film is pretty boring, and completely void of suspense. The element of comedy completely escaped me. Black and white cinematography is nice to look at, as is Fanny Ardant as a girl detective. The ending is very sweet and pretty. Not a great film, but at least cute.

About as convoluted a murder-mystery as they come. Despite giving it my undivided attention, the majority of the plot was utterly lost on me. Characters basically ramble and drool all over the place, while the story jumps from one plot point to another without the slightest semblance of coherence. Aside from one hilarious joke, the film isn't really worth checking out.

Critically, 'Vivement dimanche !' has lumbered under the expectations created by its status as Truffaut's last film and the somewhat mistaken idea that it was conceived mainly as a Hitchcock pastiche (the plot and look of the picture betray a much broader range of noir influences); divorced from that baggage, it's a breezy, witty, well-shot little thriller, with a much more engaging (and less precious) performance from Ardant than in Truffaut's previous film.
