Completely ridiculous finish to an otherwise enjoyable Bogart/Greenstreet time.

A clever psychological thriller, although it sacrifices an awful lot of plausibility for its cleverness. If you can maintain your suspension of disbelief it's an enjoyable mystery. The clear highlight is Bogart, who hides a dark intensity under his affable exterior. Greenstreet isn't as compelling but he plays a crucial role and does it well. The weak link is Alexis Smith, very blah. The film isn't hugely impressive in any particular area, but it doesn't lack in any particular area either.

The "man acts like an idiot and leads to his own downfall" noirs are generally far from my favourites, but this one worked out quite well for me. It's unspectacular, but it also never falters and Bogart is a good lead. He has the right mix of toughness and confusion for the role and allows the seeds of doubt the film sows to be effective. He also makes the film's resolution work in a way I wouldn't have expected even after I figured out where the film was going.

Interesting, overlooked film with Bogart as a murderer. Pretty good.

All quite good...until that lame-ass resolution. And speaking of lame: how about the title? (might as well have called the thing Story).

An old story that Bogart fits well.

Bogart and some great cinematography make for some memorable moments in an otherwise average thriller about a haunted murderer.

DVDRip Classics.

Bogart is often at his most interesting when he's playing bad. This is a very underrated Bogart that works very well. It's a bit far-fetched but clever enough to overcome it, with good plotting, a sharp script, and an interesting use of gaslighting elements. Really good stuff. For a lot of actors this might be their best film--obviously for Bogey it's not even close, but it deserves to be mentioned more. I didn't know exactly where it was going for quite a while, which was refreshing.

Cunning Conflict (1945). Wasn't too thrilled at first, but it was Humphrey Bogart so all was good. Then the psychology and games began, and yeah, absolutely cunning!

I'm surprised that this isn't better known. While it's nowhere near A-list Bogart films, it's still an atmospheric Film Noir with Bogie as a bad guy. It also co-stars Sydney Greenstreet from e.g. Casablanca. You can clearly see that director Bernhardt was inspired by German expressionism and the film's strongest scenes such as Bogart emerging from the fog would fit perfectly in a horror film. The twists are a bit too familiar for modern audiences, but it's still worth a watch.
