Quite underrated. The story of Marie Walewska, one of Napoleon's long term mistresses and mother of one of his illegitimate children and her relationship with Napoleon. Not amazing, but compelling with a good love story and a multi-faceted Napoleon.

Starts off like it was The Scarlet Empress (1934). Has stunning sets and costumes. Got a intense and difficult romance. And definitely solid performances from both stars - Greta Garbo & Charles Boyer. Yet, it's an uneven picture and one of MGM's biggest money losers during the Golden Age of Hollywood. They try and make it too much like a romantic farce. It's all about the on/off relationship of Marie Walewska and Napoleon. Trying to make a strained romance sweet.
