Straightforward interesting well done film. Excellent performances. I was surprised they didn't dig into the bad guys anymore than they did, or mention that Ken died in an (accidental?) fall 6 months after his release. Why was the DA so against not overturning a conviction she had nothing to do with originally?

I'm one of the few who really loved this movie. The story is absolutely incredible and inspiring. The performances by Swank and Rockwell are outstanding and both deserve recognition, but the standout for me was Juliette Lewis who acted the hell out of the 2 scenes she was in.

I quite like this despite the fact that it sometimes borders on sentimental cliché. It's got two very committed performances from Swank and Rockwell (with great supporting roles for Melissa Leo and Juliette Lewis, too) and enough emotional pull and honest sentiment to make for an engaging inspirational drama.

"Conviction is the kind of more-bland-than-truly-bad Oscar bait that, to its credit, displays genuine affection for its characters." - Andrew Schenker

Strictly by the numbers and bland, no surprises or standouts here.

Fine performances across the board and there's no denying it's an interesting story, but it's oozing schmaltz out of every pore. I cringed a couple times and said "ugh" out loud once.

Lots of fine acting, but the executing was like long life sentence. Like you were behind the bars instead of this side of brick.

Too predictable. Well, all based-on-a-true-story movies are. Great performances though.

Well DNA DUH! Might have been more "shocking" if it had come out in the mid-90's, now most of it just seems pretty obvious. Rockwell is good like allways.

I recently watched All Good Things and some other law suit movies. All i can say law is not accurate most of the time. If someone diggs it there is allways a way to prove innocence or false it. There are lots of cruelty and bad stuff in the world and people's law is not enough to seperate each.

Moves slowly and is far too oscar-grabby-sappy for its own good. Rockwell is decent but not as good as I had been hoping for and everyone else is fair to middling. Too long with too many cringe worthy parts.

Swank--the most heroic of actresses--battles injustice in this earnest, plodding movie that is almost worthy of her. Sam Rockwell is explosive, funny and dangerous, and Juliette Lewis (with the help of marvelously bad teeth) delivers a memorable performance in her less than ten minutes of screen time.

Sam Rockwell is the most consistently great actor in the business. Overall though, Conviction was released a couple decades too late. I understand that the plot is that of true events, but the build up was way too long for an arc as simple as DNA evidence.

Ends on a happy note ----- but! The guy died two weeks after he was released in a car accident. Could be a much more different film about grief etc. Some good acting but that's all. Swank's accent was very irritating though.

"Conviction may not much tease the intellect, but one would have to be a rock to be unmoved by the true story's dramatic arc, well played by Swank and Rockwell."

Good performances and premise, but the execution was flawed. The writing and development just seemed very shallow, but I can't say I wasn't interested in the story and characters.

Interesting story - poor execution (lame joke, sorry). While Rockwell was decent, Swank was terribly irritating: she kept me from having any sympathy with her character during the whole movie. The thought of such things actually happening is terrifying indeed - but that in itself does not make this a good movie, I'm afraid.

As with most films like this that are based on actual events, the story is often a bit predictable and cliché. It is still a nice, enjoyable film however, loved the colour grading in some scenes (particularly some of the flashback scenes which had some really vibrant colours) and the acting and pacing are quite good.

Hilary Swank. She either acts amazing or shitty. This is one of the former thankfully, along with Sam Rockwell.

Spoiler alert: The true story is that he fell down a well and died six months after his release from prison. Fucking hilarious. Anyway, the movie itself is pretty lame and essentially revolves around correcting an administrative error. Sam Rockwell is, as always, a redeeming factor.

The fact that it's based on a true story is worth watching alone, only because it sheds light on the all too true fact that appealing a conviction is an incredibly difficult process. The story is made all the more interesting by Betty Anne Waters own personal journey to become a lawyer with the sole purpose of saving her brother. That being said, the performances from Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell are good, but this film has no spark to it. It's all just a little too dry.

Superior courtroom/underdog story may be predictable in its broad arc (and even in some of its particulars) but is sold by excellent performances all round (Swank, Rockwell and Driver make a terrific team) and the beautiful structuring of the first half, which allows the audience to take an active role in filling out the back story, making the potentially stale material seem brighter and fresh. Perhaps too calculated to be moving at several junctures, but still hits (and succeeds) beautifully.
