Cooking History is about army cooks, about how everyday needs of thousands of armed stomachs affected victories and defeats of the statesmen. About field kitchen as a model of the world where food preparation becomes a fight strategy. A fight for great ideals standing on strong legs of the kitchen table. The film is based on eleven recipes of the cooks since the Second World War till the war in Tchetchenia, from France through Balkan to Russia.

A peculiar documentary that often skirts the line between clever & stupid, but I'm going with the former. It's tough to say exactly what this documentary is about, as it's only superficially "about" army cooks and their recipes. At times it's a darkly humourous contrast between the horrors of war and the levity of cooking; at others Kerekes seems to be drawing parallels between the soldier's slaughter and the cook's and examining the moral culpability of the cook as part of the war machine.
