Even Bakshi now admits that the title is indefensible; and it was a decision that virtually guaranteed the movie would sink without getting a fair viewing. Caricature is not inherently racist, and while COONSKIN is broadly drawn it's actually anti-racist rather than the reverse. But it is extreme stuff, not for every taste, and not Bakshi's best movie either. It's tough to endorse COONSKIN, but we wish the political climate of today allowed for more animated movies like this one.

A very interesting experiment - equally hilarious and bizarre. Definitely an overlooked classic of independent cinema.

Hahah whoa. Has to be seen to be believed. Up there with Wizards as the best of Bakshi, cracka!

Ralph Bakshi flick about a black rabbit from the South who comes to Harlem and takes over the criminal rackets. Weird mix of live action and animation that lifts its main plot points from Uncle Remus' Br'er Rabbit stories and pads out the running time with comically dated stereotypes of blacks, Italians and homosexuals.

An incredible and rough mixture of live action and animation in the form of a racy satire. Song of the South on acid and with a smart political edge.

How much credit should I give Bakshi here? Is this groundbreaking (for a white man) or just a blaxploitation cash-in? Either way, this is so unusual it's often interesting. While other blaxploitation pics made criminals the "superheroes", animating them & the over-the-top Bad Guys is appropriate. It also allows way more sex & violence. Bakshi's also got the mythological archetypes/stereotypes & dialogue down pat & you wonder if he's just a great mimic or hung out w/ lots of inner city blacks.

Let no man accuse Bakshi of subtlety.

It has its moments of brilliance, like all Bakshi's features do. But its commentary veers wildly: blunt to the point of condescension in one moment (though perhaps it should be?), obtuse and even baffling the next. The animation is herky-jerky, awkward. I'd probably give this another chance if I could find it in better quality than the apparent VHS-rip I watched.

Not half as clever as it thinks it is.

Song of the South...but more racist...and set in the 70's...and with animated nudity...and lots of violence...and..so..much...more

Worth at least checking out for the Scatman opening. If you can dig the style, racial anguish (i.e. f*** whitey) is basically running through every scene in some form so that’s also a plus, but man does it drag ass towards the midpoint.

They sure as shit couldn't make a film like this anymore. Which is a shame because any racist intentions this film feel too hyperbolic to be taken seriously anyway. The mix between animation and live-action is pretty neat (especially for its time) and although the storyline feels kinda contrived, it's still a cool trip, man.

Not as good as Heavy Traffic, but it still works great. If somebody would finally give this the worthwhile release it deserves, then it stands a great chance of being rediscovered.

Coonskin shows some serious growth in Bakshi's style and storytelling. It's also much more effective in relating social commentary, albeit a little heavy handed in places.

I think this is not a better film than "Heavy Traffic", since that has a more personal touch to it, but this is sharp, biting satire and there are some deeply moving sequences.

This partially animated blackploitation riff of Song of the South is certainly different and is made with admirable ambition, energy, and urgency, but unfortunately it's all just a huge mess that did very little for me. It's barely comprehensible at times and narratively all over the place, feeling like someone with 1,000 ideas trying to fit them into 80 minutes. Kudos for taking a big swing, but this one misses.
