Sylvester Stallone stars as Freddy Heflin, the sheriff of a place everyone calls "Cop Land" -- a small and seemingly peaceful town populated by the big city police officers he's long admired. Yet something ugly is taking place behind the town's peaceful facade. And when Freddy uncovers a massive, deadly conspiracy among these local residents, he is forced to take action -- and make a dangerous choice between protecting his idols and upholding the law. Without a doubt this is my favourite Stallone movie. I consider it better than the original Rocky or Rambo. Here we have a stellar cast: De Niro, Ray Liotta, Harvey Keitel and Robert Patrick. Stallone is the star and you'd think he'd be completely out of his league but not only does he manages to hold his own against other great actors but he actually really, really shines. This is an excellent slow-paced thriller that's definitely not standard Stallone action-fare. Must see for sure.

Every time I look at the cover my instinctive reaction is: 'Hm. Stallone can act.' And every time I have that reaction, I think to myself that I have to watch it again to remember the plot. And every time I watch it again I think: 'Hm. Stallone can act'.

I love this film. A wonderfully paced, slow burning drama, with a clean cut simple plot that allows the characters to interact perfectly. It's short enough not to out-stay its welcome or drag the simplistic plot out into something it is not. Good performances all round, and a frankly excellent performance from Sly, who puts in his best leading role since Rocky. I particuarly like the climactic scene which brings the film to an exciting and dramatic ending. An engaging and underrated drama.

A slow but good and simple crime drama augmented and improved by Stallone and the other cast members' performances. The plot is very comprehensible and straightforward. It was decent until the final minutes in which a disjointed and muddled ending hurts the film. I recommend it, but you must prepare yourself for the climax.

I would have liked it more if they didn't do that weird kind of wrap-up voice over that explained how everything turned out after the events of the movie took place. Overall, I still believe it is underrated.

Here is a movie where Sylvester Stallone proves that even with typecasting he is still a powerful actor with dramatic range. It features a great cast of great actors (who unfortunately seem to be sleepwalking through most of their recent films) showing off their considerable acting chops as well. It's a straight up thriller with no real action that makes you pay attention and immerse yourself in the plot. The movie is highly underrated just like Stallone's acting ability.

There's a line in the trailer that Robert De Niro delivers with such disdain, "...and you BLEW it." I have always associated that line with the movie Backdraft. That's my fondest memory of this film.

I just re-watched this one recently, and on a second viewing, I completely flip-flopped my score. It's a nice little movie with a bunch of big actors. I can't say it's perfect by any means of the imagination, but I'd watch it again in, say, another 2 or 3 years.

A well-made cop drama with good work from Stallone, De Niro, Keitel, Liotta, and everyone else involved. Possibly the Stallone movie that least feels like "a Stallone movie," and although there are a couple little plot holes the brooding mood makes it fairly absorbing. Also, Janeane Garofalo out of fucking nowhere.

Slow burn crime drama with a rather dull plot, but some enjoyable performances. The 'downtrodden loser' role is Stallone at his most watchable and this ineffectual, lumbering sheriff really works for me. There are some great actors being underutilised here, but each get a few good scenes as they intentionally or unintentionally provoke our protagonist into action. Oh, and De Niro is funnier here than in any of his supposed comedies; that hair and moustache are just awesome.

Old-school cop drama conceals what is ultimately a familiar throughline with its bevy of heavy-hitters in the cast - with Keitel and De Niro firing on all cylinders, this is still stolen by a tamped-down Stallone, creating a genuinely heartfelt portrait of tragic loneliness and disaffection - this may be his best and most likable performance to date (even above ROCKY). Some gaps in logic are forgiven by the rich performances and Mangold's visceral feel for this depressed and dank community.

Well-acted, and that includes action-star Stallone in a softer, more subtle role than I've ever seen him in. A simple crime plot is still engaging, and allows the characters to shine (De Niro's IA agent still feels mostly inconsequential, but Liotta's complex and volatile Figgis is a perfect complement to the more straight-forward duo of Freddy and Ray), but ultimately feels undercooked, with the issues underlying the initial point of conflict left untouched and the conclusion a little too neat.

Brilliant cast, intriguing story. I really liked Stallone's controlled performance here. I just think the film tried to do too much within its running time, so the ending initially felt a bit jarring, and I felt that credibility was being stretched a bit. I'd happily give it another watch, though.

Interesting. The story is told in pictures more than words which suits Sylvester, and provides for some creative shoot. Everybody else & the plot particulars do their usual thing but are sidelines. An abosrbing cop drama fueled by a stellar cast and Stallone's commendable performance as the self-reproachful sheriff reluctant to betray his fellow officers. "Cop Land" is a solidly entertaining crime thriller with a good cast and an interesting premise. It is never on the top of its game, but it never gets too sleazy either. The ending, however, disappoints by being too moralistic and conventional, weakening the final result. The standout in this otherwise formulaic film is Stallone. His quiet, stoical performance as the sheriff of Cop Land is one of the best of his career and it elevates the film to a watchable state.

An excellent idea, imperfectly executed. The film fails to choose what it wants to be. With tones of 50's cop movie, mob movie and character study, it fails to achieve any of them to any great degree of success. Stallone is believable or terrible, depending on the scene, and despite the pretty star-studded cast, there just isn't the meat for anyone to get excited about. The climactic scene seems to want to be scorcese, but comes out too much like one of stallone's earlier flims. Disappointing,

Cop Land works and overall, works well. But it's a strange thing when you encounter a film that seems to do everything right but still not make that extra *push* towards success, either in iconic, quality or cult categories. I think it has no motivating thread - not much makes me want to care, no matter how excellent De Niro's mustache or Stallone's drawl may be.

The possibilities for this ensemble are immense, but there is little chemistry amongst the actors. Liotta and Stallone are both terrible. De Niro is under-utilised and the only thing Robert Patrick really contributed was a strangely hilarious slow motion death scene. The story itself is somewhat interesting, but ham-fisted direction and poor acting let it down.

A traditional western disguised as a New York police corruption plot by an unsung contemporary director who hearkens back to classic storytelling and substance over style. Starring Stallone in one of his best performances, a subdued and modest one as partially deaf Sheriff Freddy Heflin, and featuring almost literally everybody ever. I mean, name an actor. Mangold's intention to create an 'urban western' with a simple fable like quality was a risky choice in a post Tarantino cinematic world, but he pulled it off admirably, even if the film is nowhere near a masterpiece. A fine ensemble cast led by Stallone contributes greatly to the proceedings, and Mangold's low key direction leaves no room for showboating. Stallone is a clear standout though and does fine work in an understated role.

COP LAND is a fine ensemble piece hiding a potentially great character study. The film features several intriguing characters caught in a wide net of police corruption, but truly shines whenever it focuses on Stallone's small-town sheriff eager to appease the crooked NYPD cops who live in his community. The story's predictability eventually works to its advantage as Stallone slow-burns his way toward a cathartic release after decades of frustration, impotency, and compromise.

Mangold pushes a cop film narrative towards a Western gunfight conclusion but in so doing just substitutes one (slightly different) generic mythology for another. Perhaps he was following TAXI DRIVER's recoding of THE SEARCHERS: evidence might be the casting of De Niro and Keitel, the Ethan and Scar substitutes in Scorsese's more complex, critical genre-mixing classic. But here the ambivalence about heroism remains unresolved, resulting in a lack of sureness about how to bring events to a close.

Cop Land is thrilling throughout. Sylvester Stallone's performance was surprising. He played a meek, unwitting sheriff in a town that is run by the cops who live there. Janeane Garofalo really showed her chops as well as an actress. I wish that I could see more performances like this out of the both of them. The script and directing of this movie are top-notch - both done by James Mangold. All of the actors that played in this movie fit right in to a New York cop story. I would watch this again.

James Mangold loves westerns. Cop Land channels Rio Bravo in its structure and rests on the shoulders of some great performances. What was heralded as "that one time Stallone gained weight" really does him wrong, as he probably gives the best performance of his career. The remainder of the cast is just a plethora of people you love to see on screen. The actual narrative may be the only pitfall, but there is enough to hoist it up to something really great.

There are one or two cheesy sub plot elements/cliches but it does well at highlighting corruptio9n, if your ok with following things on a small town level. This isn't great but its certainly ok. There's so much great stuff here, solid performances by the awesome cast and a wonderful premise, but I think the whole thing might have worked better as a TV series or a miniseries, because as a movie it feels a tad overstuffed and messy.
