Cosmos

Worth watching for lovers of the more serious sci-fi. There are at least two scenes that are phenomenal and rare to find in big sci-fi films with much bigger budgets. But apart from those standout scenes (satellite scene and ending) there's still a lot more to enjoy. My biggest gripe is the race against the clock suspense in the final act, which felt unnecessary and very Hollywoodesque. That could have been cut entirely and the film would've been better for it. Apart from that: Uplifting.

A decent enough story arc that gets too entangled in overwrought male-friendship drama. The weird race against the clock in the finale also seemed needlessly tacked on. Still, it's a pretty solid piece of hard sci fi done with pretty much no budget. Worth a shot if SETI-fiction is your thing.

not so good

I bumped this fun Sci-fi movie from 70 to 80 based on pluckiness alone. The story is about three astronomers who end up intercepting a signal from space. The ups and downs of this movie are all over the place. The beginning of the movie was rough with a lot of story telling that didn't make sense. When they started filling in the gaps, I didn't think a lot of the drama was well earned. The end of the movie jumps the shark a bit. It can be a lot of fun but you kind of have to meet it halfway.

A rewarding thriller with low budget. Sucks, Hollywood!
