Well, a sci-fi set in 1873 could have worked if Favreau and the screenwriters had some good humour, if they managed to produce some laughs instead of that amount of slaughter. Everyone seems too serious, too hard with themselves in this film: Daniel Craig with those looks, Ford with that old-tired-Indy face -- Dano was supposed to be funny, but he just did that crazy guy of There Will Be Blood again. Where is the director of Iron Man?

Because it plays it so safe with its structure and characters, it fast becomes a painfully dull and tiring watch. The good news is that you won't feel unsatisfied for long because you'll soon forget that you even saw it.

Ford's otherwise superfluous character hits the nail on its head when he accidentally describes the plot outline of the movie with the line: "Well that's just ridiculous". I can't put my finger on why this isn't working. There is of course the problem with the uninteresting characters, especially Craig and Ford, also Paul Dano's role in the plot is just idiotic. I don't really know how this could have been made better. Other than Clint taking over Fords role, which would have helped enormously.

It's not a good thing when your main actors (playing cookie cut characters) are completely out shined by the supporting cast, and even they're wasted. This seems more like a overly serious parody of both genres, and wasn't nearly on par with even some of the worst sci-fi abominations to come out recently. At least Skyline and Battle LA didn't almost put me to sleep...

Wow, this could have been a big blockbuster. All the ingredients are there with a great script. But they should have injected the movie with some more fun. Unfortunately Daniel Craig is the main protagonist. He wakes up with a fucking alien gun attached to his arm and he walks around like he doesn't care and just found a cheap watch or something. What a moron. Clive Owen or even Nicolas Cage (could have been his big comeback) fit this role much better. All in all enjoyable, but it's lacking.

Going into this film I had guessed that we would see classic cowboy archtypes and classic alien archtypes. That is to say, little grey men and flying saucers. Why did they bother inventing this new alien race? It would have been satisfying to see some 4 foot aliens murdered towards the end of the film. Perhaps such a scene wouldn't have made it into a PG13 film, though.

Aside from Daniel Craig being an excellent badass of few words and Harrison Ford having a couple of nice scenes, this is actually a pretty generic alien invasion flick. The premise was really cool, which is why it was such a downer when the movie just went in every direction you thought it would. While pacing is a big problem (and Jon Favreau maybe not being cut out for action movies), the aliens being completely devoid of character and dialogue is a big hit. Shitty forced romance too.

COWBOYS & ALIENS doesn't go for the over-the-top approach that the high-concept title might suggest. It's all played pretty straight, which, combined with the thin story and characters results in a film that is rarely fun, and shockingly dull in spots. The action is well enough done, but it's really nothing we haven't seen before. Daniel Craig is wasted, as is Sam Rockwell; only Harrison Ford brings any real gusto to his character. Some nice directorial touches, but a major letdown overall.

About a year ago when I first heard about this bad boy I was really pumped, I heard who was in it and I saw a preview and I nearly started foaming at the mouth. Over time the excitement dwindled and by the time I saw it I still thought it was an ok concept and that's all it ended up being: an alright movie with only half a heart put into it.

It's got the right idea - it's ambitious and takes chances. It's a solid concept. I just didn't think the execution was all that great. It built up a decent-enough atmosphere of "oh my God, I don't remember who I am, but some shit has clearly gone down and I need to get to the bottom of it", and the sci-fi budget for the second half of the movie is utilized quite effectively (I really have no qualms with the how the movie was shot or the CGI and special effects). I dunno. Just didn't hit for me.

Although Cowboys & Aliens gets bogged down by a few weak characters and cliche action movie one-liners, it's still a blue laser-fueled thrill ride. High production values, escalating action and a good cast make this a great summer blockbuster.

So sad, cause' it could have been so great. Everything was there from the title to the cast, but it ends up with nothing. The characters are annoyingly hollow and the storyline is pretty dumb. I also hate when an outnumbered force (the cowboys) at first is taken out one by one until a sudden turn of events make them take out the aliens instead. When that happens you just sit back with the feeling of WTF just happened. I repeat, it could have been so great!

"Cowboys and Aliens" seems like it's written by a child with too many toys. The cowboys and aliens mesh together well enough, but that's only because you're given so little for each character that anything still seems plausible. Every character has one trait that they have and most don't change it by the end. They clearly state what their goal is and there's very little left to subtext. Still, the gun-fights are fun, the explosions are better and the aliens look interesting enough.

A smattering of stars, with great comic actors hidden amongst them, doesn't make up for dire direction. Writers and director are unable to give us either a compelling Western or Sci-Fi Horror, let alone a mash up of the two. The film is at its best when it abandons even trying to ape those genres and gives us a Fantasy Adventure: some dudes in old-timey clothes trek through the wilderness and fight cgi monsters ala Clash of the Titans, Fellowship of the Ring, and the first half of King Kong.

Any movie w/this title should be outrageous, funny, or at least intriguingly quirky. Unfortunately it's Tentpole Hollywood product, which is 2 say, none of those things. The aliens look great but are as interesting as the humans, which is 2 say not at all. Focused on 1-note Templates (Stoic Bad-ass, Ornery Cattle Baron, Pretty Girl, & Honorable Indians) shockingly devoid of anything resembling an interesting personality, the film actually expects us 2 care when any 1 of them kicks the bucket.

Jon Favreau delivers one of the summer's most entertaining films---do not listen to the naysayers! The filmmaker has concocted a gritty western thriller that works wonders on its own before spinning our heads into a silly alien invasion plot. Leave it to Ford, Craig, Rockwell, Dano and more to carry us through a simultaneously visceral and silly western-sci-fi hybrid that is a lot more fun than its been given credit for. I had a blast.

A very fun movie. It's got some of the best looking aliens that we've seen in the last few years and all the actors bring what they can to the film. Most of their characters are relatively one-dimensional but I didn't care too much as I was too busy enjoying myself. I didn't really like Wilde's character turn but I understood why they did it. There are much worse summer popcorn flicks.

If you want to see a unique blend of these two genres, there's several Doctor Who episodes that will suit your fancy much better. Jon Favreau's attempt to mix science-fiction into a Western is odd, clumsy, and a little bit of a letdown, despite its glossy visuals. It has some decent performances from Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, but on the whole Cowboys & Aliens just feels awkward with its forced blend of the two genres.

Not at all fun or absurd as the title might suggest. The action is pretty boring, the characters uninteresting, and the plot and dialogue can get unintentionally cheesy at times. It spends far too much time justifying WHY the aliens are there. I DON'T CARE, especially when the reason is as lame as it is. Also, is it just me or do all modern day alien movies recycle the same CGI creature design with a few minor tweaks? It's so tired at this point.

Very disappointing. Follows the modern trend (Orci and Kurtzman) of just chucking way too much in for the film to ever be coherent. Just counting how many character relationships Harrison Ford is meant to have is enough to keep you distracted. Three son figures, three authority rivals - at least he was spared a love interest. He isn't even the lead! Could and should have been much, much better.

I enjoyed this far more the second time around. I may have initially expected too much given the unique (though silly) premise and the massive talent level on board. But if you go in understanding it's just your typical 90s-type summer blockbuster akin to Independence Day, it's not bad. If only they had further developed the alien's backstory or employed a slower tease reveal instead of wasting valuable time on that awful Native American subplot, this just might have been half-decent.

Everyone loves a good western, now mix it up with some creepy aliens who are robbing the earth of it's gold, add Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford as gritty heros and you've got something worth watching. Also, Abigail Spencer was very pretty in this one. The story is far fetched, well complete lunacy really, but fun nevertheless. A good enjoyable movie, and I want one of those cool braclets. I was fairly dissappointed... And, I'm agreeing with many things that I'm reading here on the Board, too: "recycled aliens", "nothing special", "rarely fun", "seamless effects"... Personally, I found it to be somewhat unfocused, and it didn't fully engage me emotionally... UNTIL! Ironically, Olivia Wilde clues us in, and becomes the saving grace of the story! ...But, in general, I didn't fully believe how these 19th century humans were dealing with "alien monsters", and their "flying machines".

Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford are wonderful to watch act on screen in any film and this is no exception.
