Not nearly as funny as the prequel "Ordinary People".

Totally hypocritical film that tries to get us to feel sorry for these mental patients but takes lots of cheap shots at them anyway

The love story is totally contrived and messy, and honestly, so is most of the mental instituition stuff. The movie can't really decide if it wants to empathize with the patients or take pot-shots at them. BUT, this movie is still recommendable, in large part because the initial advertising concepts that get Moore's character institutionalized are so fucking funny that I still remember them vividly, though I haven't seen the film in years. I can't look at a Volvo without thinking of this.

Film tries to create a screwball atmosphere blending a Preston Sturges-like satire of business with Frank Capra-ish sentiment. The mock commercials are funny, but that's about all that is.

this is not why dudley moore was famous, and the story made me roll my eyes enough to emulate a seizure, but i'll be damned if hannah wasn't hot and this movie didn't have some sublime one liners.

I remember thinking this was funny. I'd watch it again. I remember one of the ad campaigns they come up with as being hilarious to this day.

The only thing keeping this from being truly forgettable and completely mediocre is that a few comedy bits are just funny and witty enough to make it worthwhile. Every character is either a really good person or cartoonishly evil, save for Paul Reiser who is somehow the middle ground complicated character. You know I'm pretty sure commandeering an army heli to break mental patients out of a hospital is a very complicated mess and not really a great ending, I'd much rather see the result of that.

Vague recollection tells me that this Dudley Moore vehicle actually had something going for it. If someone were to put a gun to my head and force me to rewatch one Daryl Hannah movie I would probably choose this.
