"Crazy Rich Asians" is a landmark film proving that big budget Asian cast Romance movies can be just as polished and generic as their white counterparts, as if that was something worth proving. Horay for ethnic diversity in Hollywood.

This is the movie that has critics all a buzz and has gotten major SJW attention? Really? An overly safe romcom where everyone is a one-dimensional cliche backed by extraordinarily trite storytelling (The male lead literally chases down the love interest before she leaves by plane). There are thousands if not millions of movies with an all-Asian cast, and somehow this one is supposed to be special? What a load of shit. This shows that people asking for "diversity" don't care about foreign films.

I think, two-thirds deep into any given year in film, you really start seeking out the home runs. The flicks that catch you by surprise with how much you enjoy them. Count CRA into that group for me. It diverts in significant ways from the book but, as often happens, that bore no impact on my enjoyment of the film. Really solid performances all-around (Awkwafina is funnier here in her first 2mins of screen time than all of "Oceans 8"). I laughed, I actually teared up; I was invested. Go see it!

Doesn’t reinvent the rom-com formula by any means (he literally chases her down before her plane leaves) but does it better than almost any film in recent memory. The laughs are big, the obstacles are intimidating, and the romances are adorable. Also lives up to the “Crazy Rich” part of its name - the true-to-life extravagance on display is often jaw-dropping.

Yes, it has all the trappings of the romcom genre. It is remarkable how ineffectual Nick is during the whole film. Either he never noticed, or he just didn't care enough to give Rachel a heads up. Still, I enjoyed this film.

Like many a rom-com, the comedy is mostly from the supporting players and many here are good. The male lead was written with literally zero personality, which makes it somewhat difficult to care about the central love story. The opulence on display helps separate this from the pack, as well.

There were still stereotypical characters I could have done without (gay Asian stylist, creepy Asian nerd), but this movie was a lot better than I expected. Awkwafina was less annoying than I'd feared. Ken Jeong is always annoying. There were some deeper themes about family and a big twist, but at the same time the resolutions were decently foreshadowed without feeling cliched. Overall it was fun---more than the generous "cliched rom-com but with Asians" that others described.

Crazy Rich Asians has a charismatic cast that works well together, in what is an otherwise ordinary RomCom that runs a little long. The best moments are between Wu and Yeoh. The other characters are obnoxious and extravagant, bordering on unlikable, though the actors do a commendable job. Director Chu shows his weakness with an unnecessary cold open and a cornucopia of ADR issues during conversations. Enjoyable with the added bonus of not being a Rogen/Franco or Sandler or Stiller ensemble.

I'm really into the class difference tropes and this whole movie feels like a missed opportunity. The difficulties the lead lady suffered through felt catty. Okay yeah, this is a romcom, but it would have been more interesting to see behind the closed curtains of the family dynasty and the flexing of the matriarchs that fight over power and influence - not being petty about someone's clothing. And the ending. WTF? The movie just decided to come to full stop in the middle of stuff happening!

What a cringefest. It's like a Hallmark movie about Asian acceptance no one needed. With major ivory tower signaling issues. As if the whole thing is a commercial for rich people apparel. Featuring a guy without a personality and a girl without charisma, who seems constantly tired and nauseated for some reason. But I guess that's what terrible writing and horrible acting get ya. I mean, I get that Chu's going for a oldschool Hollywood vibe here, it's just that he reeeeaaally sucks at it.

Mostly a generic rom-com - it does do well at the start, and introduces a fun, charismatic cast of supporting characters, and shows off Singapore very well. The end devolves into very cliche forgettable stuff, but it's what you'd expect.

A well done big-budget movie version of Dynasty w/ Asians. In a less PC-time period this would be equally popular but the critics would tear at all the clichés rather than forgive them. So given the acclaim it's receiving for "representation" it's worth noting that this does nothing to improve the image of Asian men. Other than the romantic lead who's obviously half white (to appeal to the westernized Asian females this targets), almost every Asian male here is either gay, a jerk or a buffoon.

Besides being a much-needed film in the context of the ever-growing Asian-English speaker society; it's a very decent rom-com. It has a great balance of laughs and emotions, like real give-me-tissues type emotions and the casting is almost too good. If you've read the book, you'll get more out of it, in terms of backstory. There are a lot of differences, but it is clever in the way they have made these changes, so you'll actually enjoy it anyway.

Flat, dull romantic comedy is marked by a likable performance from Wu, and a scene-stealing one from Santos in support as a playfully slimy Machiavellian, but is ultimately indistinguishable from any number of overstuffed leaden examples of the genre; goes into some surprisingly dark and ugly thematic material for an ostensible feel-gooder. Opulent cinematography and gorgeously vulgar set design are a plus; soundtrack of pop covers is especially charming.

Cute and funny. The celebrity fandom shown here is incredibly accurate and had me giggling several times. I'm normally not big on rom-coms, but I really did like this one. I was audibly laughing and gasping in the theater a few times. I hope the book lives up to it.

Peaks and valleys in terms of story substance, but this still clung to my coal-black little heart toward the end. The first half is certainly stilted, not aided by the fact that it doesn't seem to be heading anywhere interesting, and though settings and characters improve thereafter, it still tends to meander its way to the finish line. And yet it's genuine. This doesn't feel like a cheap cash-in, but rather a film made with heart and gusto. It mattered to those that made it.

Best thing to be said about this is that t's nice to see a movie with an all Asian cast in which they aren't portrayed as the usual stereotypes. Still all characters are very one-dimensional, The likable cast does their best this shallow material, making it still some bit watchable. The movie as a whole is standard romcom fare following every trope in the book and is neither funny nor did I care if two romantic leads got together in the end, which is a major fail in any romcom.

I’m probably subconsciously racist because I had a hell of an ordeal trying to keep all the secondary characters in this film straight. It’s an easy enough watch but a bit arc-free even for romcom standards as the main couple we’re supposed to root for are already an established and happy couple from the beginning of the film. My wife liked it well enough, which I guess was more the point of watching it. Really well-shot food scenes! Mouthwatering stuff.

The central coupling of CRAZY RICH ASIANS almost seems out of place in this shallow and satisfying rom-com, until you realize that the real romance is between the viewer and the culture, cuisine, and scenery of its lavish Southeast Asian setting. It is a truly transporting film that pairs beautiful faces and fresh perspectives with the genre's universal and unchanging anxieties: fitting in, getting along, and living happily ever after.

It is the rom-com-iest rom-com I've seen for a while. That being said, it still went down pretty smooth. Something kept me watching through the whole thing, which doesn't always happen with movies in this genre. Still, is it too much to ask for even a slight twist on the regular formula?

Takes a while to get anywhere substantial conflict-wise, and when it arrives it's weirdly inconsistent (the post-bach party tension was high but dissipated quite quickly; the side plot with Astrid didn't help). Overall though it has some interesting things to say about prejudice, family, and relationships on its way to a solid climactic confrontation (the Mahjong game) and resolve (cliche but sweet), with lots of laughs filling in the gaps (Awkwafina and Jeong are both hilarious in their roles).

I liked this story. The actors all did a really well. The main pair were really good. The variety of people in this movie was pretty staggering. I like the mix of serious actors and comedians. It made the movie the best parts of drama and comedy. I've seen this movie twice now and both times I really enjoyed it. This is not my usual type of movie, but I was curious because of the glowing reviews people were giving to this one and I figured there must be something special to it. Well... yes. And no. It looks so colorful and beautiful all the time, I give it that much. A lot of thought went into set design and costumes, but deep down the plot is so generic and simple. Outside of the importance of it from a mainstream Hollywood perspective it's still a good film in its own right. The stars are the set designs and costumes because they leaned so heavily into that and it paid off. Besides that it's a pretty basic romantic comedy in a lot of ways right until the end, but because it also leaned heavily into that it got me emotionally so I can't hate. The soundtrack's mixture of Chinese songs and cover versions of American songs plays into the themes nicely.

Seeing the the 'shoe on the other foot' regarding the casting in CRA with a handful of prominent Western actors hired to lure in American crowds for an Eastern film made for Eastern audiences demonstrates a shift in the cinema landscape. Hopefully this is a bellweather film and leads to future cynical casting outcomes with Asian actors in what should have been a Western actors role (think the inverse of Mike Rooney in Breakfast as Tiffany's). Awkwafina gets a shout out for carrying the comedy.

Awkwafina and Ken Jeong raise this movie slightly above mediocrity. I guess this was a necessary door-opener for an underrepresented segment of the society, and it is still pleasurable despite its flaws; but that's about it. I guess the studio executives wanted to include as many cliche rom-com stuff as they could so that they could greenlight this movie.

I do understand what all the fuss about this movie was, I just had thought it was because it was good. The acting is very mediocre in this film, but I believe the reason is the script. Since in scenes, like the Mahjong scene, where the writing was OK, there was no problem. But 90 percent of the film is written so subpar that not much the actors can do. A very mediocre rom-com, diversity wise it is a needed film, but I hope this opens to gates for better films.
