Cremaster 1

Seen all these, & they all have various engaging qualities. They unfold so slowly they are difficult to attend to. 3 is the most watchable, 4 rawest, 1 & 2 are okay, 5 is mind numbingly dull. Barney has created a work of impressive proportion, it succeeds as art, although leaves much to be desired as film. I wonder what a proper edit would do for it.

I think this is supposed to be an obtuse birth and/or ovulation analogy, with the twin blimps representing ovaries and the grapes representing eggs. Or maybe it's all just pointless artsy-fartsy nonsense that's simply supposed to look odd. Either way, dull as dirt, although the color schemes are somewhat pleasant to the eye. Like Stan Brakhage, Matthew Barney is more artist than filmmaker, but he's an installation artist which is really the worst kind.

Like a few people said, this is boring. 40 minutes of similar shots over and over and over again. But, the imagery is gorgeous and uses some pretty interesting things to make it's point. I especially like the blue football field. It's clear what it's about, and the music especially pushes the idea forward (makes it feel joyous). I'm torn on it. If you can seperate yourself from how dull it is, and appreciate the imagery it's probably worth a watch at least once.
