The film is set on the Isle of Man, in the sea between Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales. The film incorporates imagery from the island's folklore, wildlife, and annual Tourist Trophy motorcycle race. "Cremaster 4" deals with the organism's desire to return to a state of neutral gender as its male identity is formed.

Seen all these, & they all have various engaging qualities. They unfold so slowly they are difficult to attend to. 3 is the most watchable, 4 rawest, 1 & 2 are okay, 5 is mind numbingly dull. Barney has created a work of impressive proportion, it succeeds as art, although leaves much to be desired as film. I wonder what a proper edit would do for it.
