A young director intent on making "the greatest color crime movie ever" can't seem to finish his script--he has a beginning and an end, but he can't quite figure out the middle. The daughter of his landlord, excited to have a real "movie person" living nearby, tries to help by putting him in touch with a man who wants to collaborate on a script--the strange "Dr. Jolly". Funny in many layers, I laugh a lot and keep smiling afterwards. The narrator goes in my book as one of the greatest narrators, I can keep listening to her for hours, and that for a young girl... A thing like that! An example of excellent coinciding of form and content. Not everything works, but there is enough to hold my attention. And what a fresh soundtrack.

Somewhat messy, but that's more than made up for in bizarre kitschy antics. Often runs like a skit-show, with some wonderfully off-the-wall humour, utterly perfected by the mise-en-scene.

The line between amazing and terrible acting is very thin and the lead actress walks it perfectly

Every scene it tries to do is like a hokey meta parody of the scene it's trying to do and I don't see the appeal

When this finished I was thinking it was kind of slight and too intense on the meta for me but it's been stuck in my head for a couple days and I find myself laughing to myself for a couple minutes.

Its kind of destiny that weird Canadian comedy gems are mostly forgotten and never get proper release (see SCTV). A wonderfully weird and meta film that influenced a lot of Canadian filmmakers and comedies (Maddin, Kids in the Hall, etc.)

Just your run of the mill movie from the 80's that looks like it was shot in the 50's and moves seamlessly between meta observations on storytelling and sudden and spectacular violence. This is a movie that loves stories the way I do, and I love it for that. If I'd known Canada was this awesome I would've taken joseywales up on that beer tour he never invited me on. This movie refers to fame as a bitch goddess with all the subtlety of a maple syrup jar filled with mayonnaise. Needs work.

A strange link between John Waters and Guy Maddin. Shot on tangibly old film with saturated colors. Real art.

The greatest color crime movie there is. Also sort of the batshit insane missing link between Mark Rappaport and Guy Maddin (but way, way more self-devouringly meta)... or something, but at the same time completely unique and bizarre and almost indescribable.
